11 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca ALLEN, Frederick K. WWII Frederick was born in the Stanley Municipality of Manitoba in 1918. He joined the 12th Manitoba Dragoons as a Trooper at age 22 and served with the 18th Armoured Car Regiment, driving an armoured car throughout his service. These vehicles were the leading edge of troop movement into towns and villages and were also used for reconnaissance. He served in England and Europe, earning the 1939-1945 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp. During the liberation of Holland in 1945, he met and married Leny tenBos. In January 1946, Fred was discharged and returned to Canada, with his war bride following in August. They raised six children on a family farm at Thornhill, Manitoba. Fred was a member of Morden Legion Branch 11 for over fifty years until he died in June 1996. ALLEN, Richard B. WWII & SPECIAL DUTY AREA Richard was born in Winnipeg in 1920. He joined the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps and was attached to the 24th Field Ambulance, 5th Division. He served in Canada, England, Italy, France, Belgium and Holland during World War II. Richard was awarded the Canadian Forces Decoration, the 1939-45 Star, the Italy Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, the Defence Medal, the France and Germany Star, and the War Medal 1939-45. Richard was a Captain (Rtd) and Chief Instructor of the Army Cadets. He has been a member of Kenora Legion Branch 12 for sixty years. ARNOULD, Harry J. KOREA Harry was born on July 29, 1928 in Rainy River, Ontario. On January 21, 1952, he enlisted with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, 3rd Battalion of the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps. He did his basic and advanced training at Ipperwash and Camp Borden, Ontario; Wainwright and Jasper, Alberta; and at Rivers and Camp Shilo, Manitoba, where he completed his Airborne jump training. He served in Korea as a Corporal from October 1952 and was wounded a month later, in November. He also served in Japan. Harry was discharged in Winnipeg in January 1955 after which he resumed his employment with the Canadian National Railway. He was a conductor when he retired in 1984 after 40 years with C.N.R. Harry has been a Life member of Major Hughes Legion Branch 54 for fifty-six years and has held the Membership, Honours and Awards offices. Harry was awarded the UN and Korea Medals. ANDREWS, Arthur WWI Arthur joined the Army during World War I and served in France with the 45th and 78th Battalions at St. Eloi, the Somme, Vimy, Passchendaele, and Amiens where he was killed in action in 1918.
