15 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca BELL, Robert G. WWII Robert was born on April 10, 1924 in Elgin, Manitoba. He joined the Army in April 1943 and in December, went overseas where he served with the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps in Holland, France, Belgium, and Germany. He returned to Elgin in March 1946. Robert was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal with Bar, the 1939-45 Star, and the King George Medal with Crown. He was a member of Ontario’s Petrolia Legion Branch 216 for thirty-five years before he passed away on March 6, 2007. BELL, Robert J. “Bob” WWII Bob was born in Morris, Manitoba in 1903. During World War II, he served as a truck driver with the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders in England and France from March 29, 1940 to June 29, 1945. He drove his friends, William Thomson and Lloyd Shewman, in the convoy which disembarked to the battle of Dieppe where they were taken prisoners. Upon his return from overseas, Bob went into the draying business and with his horses, was a familiar figure in town. In 1953, he was employed by the Town of Morris as Superintendent of Works and Operations, retiring in 1972. Bob was a Life member of Morris Legion Branch 111 and with his wife, raised five children, including one adopted son. For years, he took part in the Big M Stampede where he raced his thoroughbreds in the chuck wagon, chariot and suicide Ben Hur races, winning many trophies. Bob was 79 years old when he died in Morris on September 23, 1982. BERRY, Albert Henry WWII Albert was born on June 22, 1923 in Glenboro, Manitoba. He was 19 when he joined the Canadian Army, going on to do his basic training in Portage la Prairie and Shilo, Manitoba. He then joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and attended the Initial Training School, the first step in becoming a pilot. Albert, Leading Aircraftman, was transferred to Edmonton, Alberta where he continued his pilot’s training. He was then sent to Lethbridge to await a further posting but the war ended before his training was finished. Albert’s name is engraved on the Veteran’s Wall of Remembrance in Winnipeg, Manitoba. His dream to become a pilot was realized in 1963 when he received his private pilot’s license. Albert was a member of Souris Legion Branch 60 and he died on October 5, 2008. BENNETT, Cameron G. C. SPECIAL DUTY AREA & PEACETIME Cameron was born in Newmarket, Ontario in 1979 and moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1984 with his parents and sister. Cameron is the grandson of a WWII Veteran and joined the Fort Garry Horse in 1998 when he was 18 years old. He transferred to Regular Force 2nd Battalion Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI) in 2000. Cameron served with them in Bosnia from October – March 2001 and in Afghanistan from March – July 2002. He then transferred to the PPCLI 1st Battalion and served in Afghanistan from January – October 2008 and from June – November 2011. Currently, Cameron is still serving.
