He joined the Army and served with No. 10 District in the United Kingdom, the Central Mediterranean and Continental Europe. He was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp. Peter joined the Sandy Lake Legion Branch 184 in 1960 and he died in 2001. SAUNDERS, Albert “Bert” WWI Bert grew up in Holland, Manitoba and worked with his brother Roy and Uncle Jack for his maternal Grandmother, Mrs. Robert Rutherford, on the family farm in the Camille district. He joined the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve and was serving as an Able Seaman on HMCS Niobe at the time of the Halifax explosion on December 6, 1917. The Niobe was moored 700 yards from the ammunition ship Montblanc which caught fire after a collision with the Belgium relief ship “Imo” in the Halifax Harbour. Niobe was the first ship to sound the alarm. Saunders and six of his mates boarded the Montblanc in an attempt to scuttle her but were killed when it exploded. The explosion also destroyed much of Halifax. Albert’s name is listed on Halifax (Fort Massey) Memorial and the Holland cenotaph. SCHOFIELD, Edith WWII Edith was born in Selkirk, Manitoba in 1917. She joined the Army and served as a First Lieutenant Nursing Sister in Canada and England during World War II. No additional information is available. SCHAMP, Gerald L. P. WWII Gerald was born in Manitoba on December 27, 1930 to Leo Schamp and Elodie Begyn of Bruxelles, but he grew up on a farm at Swan Lake. He enlisted and trained in Manitoba, first for basic training at Rivers, then as a paratrooper in Shilo. When Gerald got his wings, he went overseas with a friend who later married Gerald’s sister. While stationed in Hanover, Germany, he received a chauffeur’s license 3 weeks before his death. Gerald was reported as dying in an accident on July 23, 1956 in Limmer, Hannover, Germany.
