71 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca HICKS, Lorne H. WWII Lorne was born in Ninga, Manitoba in 1911. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy and served in Canada during World War II. He was a member of Hartney Legion Branch 26 for three years. Lorne died in January 1988. HICOCK, Charles Reuben “Rube” WWII Rube was born in Deloraine, Manitoba in 1922. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in October 1942 and served as an electrical lineman at numerous training airports across western Canada, Yukon and NWT. He was discharged on October 25, 1945 and joined the Manitoba Power Commission on November 10. Rube became District Supervisor at Whitemouth in 1949, moved to Steinbach in 1956, Transcona in 1957, and retired from Manitoba Hydro in 1981. He belonged to the Kinsmen Club, Legions, curling clubs, was involved with youth hockey and baseball, and enjoyed football. Married to Anita (née Hill) for 58 years, Rube resides in River East PCH and has been a member of the Steinbach and Transcona Legions for forty-two years. HILL, John I. WWII John was born in Sedalia, Missouri in 1903 and moved to Canada at the age of 5. He joined the Army and served with the Royal Canadian Engineers in Canada, Britain and Northwest Europe during World War II. John was a member of Fort Garry Legion Branch 90 for fifty-five years. John died in 1978. HILL, Albert John SPECIAL DUTY AREA Albert was born in Boissevain, Manitoba in 1930. He joined the Army in 1953 and served with the Royal Canadian Signal Corps, mainly in Camp Borden, Ontario as well as for two tours in Germany as a cryptographer, and short term tours in other capacities, such as in Belgium. In 1960, he spent one year with the International Supervisory Commission for Indochina, headquartered in Hanoi and Saigon (North and South Vietnam), Phnom Penh (Cambodia) and Vientiane in Laos. The Commission was responsible for monitoring and making reports on all movement of military material at various areas within Indochina. Albert retired from the military in 1961 and was awarded the Canadian Peacekeeping Medal Decoration and the International Commission for Supervision and Control Decoration. He is a member of Boissevain Legion Branch 10.
