It was built to commemorate those killed during the First World War and was unveiled in Memorial Park in Winnipeg on November 7, 1928. It has since been rededicated to include those killed during the Second World War and the Korean War. 9 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca ADAMS, Stanley George WWII Stanley was born in Selkirk, Manitoba in 1908. He enlisted in Winnipeg during WWII and served in Europe with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles. ADAMS, William Charles WWII William was born in Selkirk, Manitoba in 1924. He enlisted at the age of 17 with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles and took part in the Normandy Invasion on June 6, 1944. He was taken prisoner and was executed by the S.S. two days later on June 8. William was awarded the 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, and the War Medal 193945. William’s mother received the Silver Cross. William is buried in the Bény-surMer Canadian War Cemetery in France. AGERBAK, Borge “Buster” WWII Buster was born in Odense, Denmark in 1914 and immigrated to Canada with his family in 1927. He enlisted with his two brothers, Tage (Tiger) and Knud (Ken) in September 1939 with the Winnipeg Grenadiers. In May 1940, after serving in Bermuda and Jamaica, the Grenadiers and Royal Rifles were sent to Hong Kong, which surrendered to the Japanese on Christmas Day. Badly wounded, Buster and his brother Ken were shipped to Japan, where he survived slave labour until freed by the Americans in 1945. He returned home in October to his wife and family but suffered for years from the after effects of war illnesses. Buster worked for 27 years for the civil service and was a member of Charleswood Legion Branch 100 for more than thirty years, as well as the Hong Kong Veterans Association, the Masons and Shriners. He received the 1939-45 Star, Pacific Star, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Hong Kong Bar, War Medal 1939-45, Victory Medal, Defence Medal, Canadian Efficiency Medal, and the Canadian Centennial Medal. Buster died in 2001. ADAMS, William Graham WWI William was born in Netley, Manitoba in 1891. He enlisted in 1915 at Brandon, Manitoba and joined the 1st Canadian Mounted Rifles (Saskatchewan Regiment). He was killed in action on September 28, 1916 near Somme, France. William was awarded the 1914-15 Star, the British War Medal, and the Victory Medal 1914-19. His family received the Memorial Plaque and Scroll. He is remembered with honour on the Vimy Memorial at Pas-de-Calais in France.

11 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca AHARA, Matthew WWI Matthew was born in Ireland. He joined the Army and served with the 200th Battalion, 11th Reserve. He transferred to 104 Glenn Camp and Bell’s Scouts and also served with the 2nd Canadian Engineers. Corporal Ahara was part of the Guard of Honour to King Albert on February 2, 1919 in Liège, France. ALDRED, William WWI William joined the Army and served with 222nd Battalion and transferred to the 16th Machine Gun Company of the 44th Battalion and then to the 4th Machine Gun Battalion. Sergeant Aldred fought in France at Vimy, Hill 70, Arras, Passchendaele, Cambrai, Amiens, Mons and in Brussels. ANDERSON, Edmund WWII Edmund was born in Rainy River, Ontario on December 29, 1916 and passed away on July 30, 1983. He served as a Trooper in the Army with the 7th Canadian Reconnaissance Regiment, known as the 17th Duke of York’s Royal Canadian Hussars, in Canada, England and Northwest Europe. Edmund trained in Fort William and Borden, ON before leaving for England in October 1943. He disembarked in France on July 15, 1944 and was at Falaise Gap, Schelde, Nijmegen, Germany, and Holland, where he met his future wife in 1945. He left the UK in December 1945 and was discharged on February 9, 1946. Edmund was a member of Kenora Legion Branch 12. ANDERSON, Arnold Wellington “Andy” WWII Andy was born on February 16, 1918 in Carman, Manitoba. Before joining the Air Force in Winnipeg on September 16, 1941, he worked as a “B” operator in radar. He was posted to Edmonton for basic training and then moved to Saskatoon for two years as a member of the ground crew. Later, Andy was re-deployed to Virden to train on the iconic Tiger Moth aircraft as a pilot. However, illness intervened. He was transferred to Trenton, Nova Scotia and qualified as a radar operator. All following postings were in the east, including Louisbourg and Newfoundland, where Sergeant Anderson found the most isolated post in the world to be Cape Bauld, where he served for 14 months. The last posting of the war was Dartmouth, Nova Scotia before being discharged in Winnipeg on August 29, 1945. Andy was a member of Pine Falls Legion Branch 64 for more than fifty-four years.

In June 1940, he enlisted with the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers in Winnipeg. He was discharged there in November 1945 after having served in Italy and Northwest Europe. Harley received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. ANDERSON, Harold G. “Hal” WWII Hal was born in 1921. The family moved to Pine Falls, MB in 1927, where he attended school and later worked for the Manitoba Paper Company. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served as a Warrant Officer in Canada with #14 Squadron but died on April 1, 1943 at the age of 22. Hal is commemorated at Fort Richardson Post Cemetery in Alaska and Harold Anderson Lake, south of Swampy Lake, was named after him in 1995. ANDERSON, William C. WWI William was born in 1895 in Silverton, Manitoba and died in 1958. On March 6, 1916, he enlisted with the 107th Battalion, 1st C.M.R., serving in France. Private Anderson was discharged in February 1919. He was a member of Russell Legion Branch 159. ANDERSON, John W. WWI John was born in Silverton, Manitoba and he died in 1949. He enlisted in the Army in February 1916 and was discharged in April 1919. Private Anderson served with the 226th and 16th in France where he was wounded in both legs. He was a member of Russel Legion Branch 159.

15 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca ANTONIW, Mike E. WWII Mike joined the Army in Winnipeg in January 1942 and was discharged in May 1946. He served with the Lake Superior Regiment in Canada, the Aleutian Islands, England, and Europe. Corporal Antoniw received the France and Germany Star and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp. Mike has been a member of Russell Legion Branch 159. ARBUTHNOTT, M. R. WWII M. R. Arbuthnott served in the Canadian Navy from July 1943 to December 1945, serving in Canada and the United Kingdom on HMCS Chippewa. He was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp. He has been a member of Russell Legion Branch 159. ASELTINE, John W. “Jack” WWI Jack was born in Beachburg, Ontario on June 2, 1895. He joined the Army in 1914 and served with Lord Strathcona Horse in Canada, England, and France. He was injured in the shoulder in 1918, while leading horses back from the front line. During his hospitalization, peace was declared in Europe so Jack was repatriated to Canada. He played pro-hockey with the Regina Pats and later was moved to Winnipeg. He met Ethel Cuthbert there, got married in 1922, and they raised two children. By 1927, hockey pay was insufficient, so he began work in the Grinder Room at the Abitibi Mill in Pine Falls, Manitoba, a position he held for 30 years. “Old 44”, as he was called on the golf course, enjoyed playing with his family and friends through his retirement years. Jack was awarded the George V Medal for bravery in battle and the Lord Strathcona Horse Medal for service 1914-1918. Jack died in 1966. ARMSWORTHY, Covert W. WWII Covert was born in 1926 in Belmont, Nova Scotia. He joined the Army in April 1942 at the age of 16 but was discharged in December that same year because of his age. He joined again in June 1943 and served in Canada until January 1945. After the war, Covert left Nova Scotia and headed west to seek employment. He ended up in Regina, where he met and married his wife, Doreen Wanamaker. They moved to Flin Flon in 1948, where he worked as a miner with Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting. In 1958, they moved to Snow Lake, still working with Hudson Bay Mining, and raised four children. He resided there until his death in 1984. Covert was a member of Snow Lake Legion Branch 241 for seventeen years, was Branch President from 1966-67, and also served on the Executive for five years. He was awarded one of only 29,500 Centennial Medals issued in 1967 by the Queen of Canada to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Confederation.

17 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca ASHCROFT (nee HINCE), Eunice M. WWII Eunice was born in Shucknall-Hill, Yarkhill in Herefordshire, England in 1923. She enlisted in the Merchant Navy and served in the Women’s Army Corps and the Auxiliary Territorial Service in Seaford, England during World War II. Eunice was a member of Manitoba’s Birtle Legion Branch 55 for nineteen years. She died in 2007. ASKEW, George William WWII George was born in Cartwright, Manitoba on March 25, 1921 and grew up on the family farm. He worked as a service man in his uncle’s garage prior to enlisting with the Royal Canadian Air Force in Winnipeg on October 4, 1941. While serving in England, George was with No. 419 Squadron and took part in seven raids over a period of six weeks before being shot down over Essen, Germany on July 26, 1943. He is buried in Germany’s Reichswald Forest War Cemetery at Grave 2&3, Plot 6, Row D. George and his brother John were killed six months apart. While on leave touring England, George and John wished they remembered more of their British history. The Askew Scholarship for British History was established in 1948 for Cartwright School students in memory of George Askew and his brother John. Askew Lake, NE of North Knife Lake, was named after him in 1974. ATKINS, Gordon M. WWII Gordon was born in 1921. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served in Yorkshire, England as a navigator with Squadron 432 from 1942-45. He was a member of Portage la Prairie Legion Branch 65, as well as Glenboro Legion Branch 71. Gordon passed away in 2000. ASKEW, John Ruskin WWII John was born to Ruskin and Josephine Askew in Cartwright, Manitoba on May 22, 1919. He worked on the family farm with his father and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in Winnipeg on October 10, 1941. He trained in Brandon, Saskatoon, Paulson and Trenton, and graduated from Mountain View School as Flight Sergeant Gunner. From August 18, 1942, John served overseas as a Flight Sergeant in the Conversion Unit of the Royal Canadian Air Force and was killed in a plane crash over England on January 29, 1943. John is buried in Yorkshire in Ripon Cemetery, Section H, Grave 406. While on leave touring England, John and his brother George wished they’d remembered more of their British history. In 1948, a scholarship for British History was established, named in memory of John and George. It was later changed in 1983 to History and Canadian Studies, as British History was no longer being taught. Askew Island in Webbe Lake was also named after John in 1995.
