195 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca SCAIFE, George A. WWII George was born in Yorkshire, England and immigrated to Canada in April 1912. His father had come to Canada a year earlier, settling in Gladstone. George was raised in southern Manitoba and as a young man, worked on local farms and then with the CPR. His other interests were limited as times were tough in the “dirty thirties” but he enjoyed baseball and going to local dances. His father and brother had both served with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles, but his father didn’t want both of his sons to serve in the same regiment. Private Scaife was declared officially missing after the Dieppe Raid and pronounced dead on August 19, 1942 at the age of 31. His brother Chester also died in WWII. George is commemorated at Bergen General Cemetery in Holland. Scaife Island (64 N/15) in Putahow Lake was named after him in 1995. SCAIFE, Lawrence “Chester” WWII Chester was born in Yorkshire, England and immigrated to Canada in April 1912. His father had come to Canada a year earlier, settling in Gladstone. Chester was raised in southern Manitoba and he enjoyed skating, baseball and attending local dances. He worked on neighbouring farms until June 1940 when he enlisted. He trained at Shilo, Manitoba and in Truro, Nova Scotia and then was sent overseas to Aldershot, England in 1941. Chester served with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles, the unit his father has served in during WWI. He took part in the invasion of Normandy and died on June 6, 1944 at the age of 27. Corporal Scaife is commemorated at Bény-sur-Mer Canadian War Cemetery in Calvados, France. His brother George also died in WWII. SCHROT, Gustave R. WWII Gustave was born in 1921. He enlisted in the Royal Winnipeg Rifles in October 1943 and served in Canada and the United Kingdom, as well as in Continental Europe. He was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, the Victory Medal and the ETO Medal. He was discharged in May 1946. Gustave was a member of Russell Legion Branch 159 and is now deceased. SCHINDEL, Clarence L. R. SPECIAL DUTY AREA Clarence was born in Morden, Manitoba in 1950. He joined the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve and served on the High Seas on HMCS Qu’Appelle. Clarence is now living in Calgary, Alberta and works as a geologist consultant.
