51 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca COWAN, Hugh A. WWII Hugh was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1915 and he died in 2002. He served with the Royal Canadian Air Force in Canada, United Kingdom and Northwest Europe during WWII. Hugh was a member of Fort Garry Legion Branch 90 for forty-four years. CRAMPTON, Dudley WWII Dudley was born in England in 1924. During WWII, he served with the Duke of Wellington Armoured Corps, 8th Royal Tank Regiment, in England, India, Singapore, Pakistan and Sumatra. Dudley is a member of Fort Garry Legion Branch 90. CUTTS, Arthur Earl W. WWII Arthur was born in Beulah, Manitoba in 1916 and he joined the Army in September 1939 at the age of 23. He served in Canada, Italy, England, Holland and Germany with the Royal Canadian Engineers where he was classified as Pioneer C and Motor Mechanic B, attaining the rank of Corporal. While serving in England at his home base near Balcombe in the county of Sussex, he met and married Mary Knight. Arthur’s unit was dispatched to Italy, then to Holland. After his discharge on August 11, 1945, he returned to civilian life in Winnipeg. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp. Arthur was a member of Fort Garry Legion Branch 90 for over fifty-five years before he passed away in 2002. CRAWFORD, David Laird “Dave” WWII Dave was born in Selkirk, Manitoba on February 10, 1913. He first enlisted on November 10, 1943 as a rifleman with the 4th Battalion, Royal Winnipeg Rifles. He later became a driver mechanic with Group “C”. This was fortunate because he was originally considered for training as a rear tail gunner in bombers because of his small stature. Very few of those individuals survived the war for they were a prime target of enemy fighters. Dave was one of the older servicemen at 30 years of age, but he was very physically fit. He served until his demobilization on June 6, 1946, earning him the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp. He served in Canada, in the United Kingdom and Continental Europe. After discharge, he worked with the Abitibi Paper Company in Pine Falls, Manitoba. Dave was a member of Pine Falls Legion Branch 64 before he passed away in Winnipeg on October 5, 2003.
