37 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca BUNN, Hugh H. F. B. WWII Hugh was born in 1925 in The Pas, Manitoba. He joined the Home Guard Reserve Unit Fort Garry Horse and spent summers with the Unit at Camp Shilo, Manitoba. At age 18, he enlisted in the Army, took basic training at Fort Garry and advanced training at Shilo, specializing in small arms weapons and bayonet drills. He volunteered to help the Americans, so transferred to Camp McCauley in Victoria, BC but never shipped out as the atom bomb was dropped, ending the war with Japan. Hugh helped transport the returning POWs from the ship to the hospital. He had his platoon of men give about 100 badly crippled soldiers home from Japan an Eyes Right and Salute in honour of what they had gone through as they were leaving the hospital grounds. Corporal Bunn worked in Ottawa preparing War Service Gratuity for discharged veterans. Hugh and his wife, Beth, reside in Edmonton during the winter, returning home to Snow Lake for the summer. Hugh has been a member of Snow Lake Legion Branch 241 for a number of years. BURNETT, Charles C. WWII & KOREA Charles was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in August 1921. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served in Canada. He has been a member of Elmwood Legion Branch 9 for more than forty-five years. BURNS, William R. WWII William was born in Wood Bay, Manitoba in 1923. He joined the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve during WWII and served in Canada and Newfoundland doing convoy duty on the North Atlantic on the Frigate HMCS Lauzon. He was a member of Pilot Mound Legion Branch 62 for many years before he died in 1993. BURNS, Tyler J. SPECIAL DUTY AREA Tyler was born in 1987 in Morden, Manitoba. He is a member of Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry based out of Shilo, Manitoba. Tyler did his training in St. Jean, Quebec. He served in Afghanistan from November 2009 until May 2010.
