103 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca KOHUT, Harry WWII Harry was born in July 1923 in Rosa, Manitoba but the family moved to the Souris district in 1929. He remained there all his life except for his years in the service. On September 28, 1943, Harry enlisted in Winnipeg, Manitoba with the Royal Canadian Air Force. He trained in Regina, Saskatchewan then served as a Leading Aircraftman in Canada and Newfoundland. Harry was honourably discharged at Lachine, Quebec in February 1950 and was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp. He married Joan Milnes on February 22, 1946, raised a family of four, and ran a Massey Harris/Massey Ferguson dealership before switching to selling farm parts in Souris from 1947 until 1989. He was a member of Souris Legion Branch 60 for fifty years. Harry passed away in Souris in April 1992. KOSKI, Severi W. WWII Severi was born in 1921 in New Finland, Saskatchewan. He enlisted in the Army in 1942 and served as a rifleman with the Regina Rifle Regiment in Canada, England, and France. On D-Day, June 6, 1944, he was wounded in action on the beaches of Normandy, France. Severi then spent the next 2 years recovering in the Deer Lodge Hospital in Winnipeg. He was discharged in February 1945. Severi was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion in Dauphin and Ste. Rose. He died in 1993. KOWALCHUK, Eugene PEACETIME Eugene was born in Hatherleigh, Saskatchewan in 1929. He joined the RCAF and served with the 12th Manitoba Dragoons in Souris, Manitoba in 1950 and was discharged in 1962. He trained and served in Souris and surrounding areas. Eugene has been a member of Souris Legion Branch 60 for more than fifty-seven years. KOSTELNYK, John J. K. WWII John was born on February 22, 1919 in Poland. In 1939, he was taken by the Russian military and sent to concentration camps in Siberia. In 1941, after England and Russia signed a military pact, he became a member of the Polish Army under British Command with Marshall Montgomery. He served in Iran, Iraq, Palestine, Egypt, and Italy, where he took part in the Monte Casino invasion. He remained in Italy until D-Day, then was sent to England in 1945 and demobilized from the Army in 1947. Given a choice of going to any Commonwealth country, he chose St. Martin, Manitoba, as he had a brother living there. On March 6, 1948, he married Olga Trochanowski and they took over her parents’ farm, raising six children there. In 2000, they moved to Ashern, where they still reside. John has been a member of Ashern Legion Branch 57 for more than twenty years.
