107 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca LAIDLAW (nee MacDONALD), Jeanne F. WWII Jeanne was born in 1920 in Cartwright, Manitoba. She joined the Canadian Women’s Auxiliary Air Force in January 1942, took her basic training in Toronto, then went to the #4 Wireless School in Guelph before being posted to Ontario’s Rockcliff Air Force Base with #4 Squadron, B Flight. In December 1942, her group went overseas, landing in Liverpool then to Bournemouth and finally, was posted to Linton-on-Ouse. Many months later, she was posted to London, which was being bombed by the Germans at that time. She served there until she returned to Canada on December 18, 1945. In 1946, she married Dougald MacDonald, a fighter pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force. Widowed in 1958, Jeanne was left to raise their four young children. Now in her 90s, she is living in the personal care home at The Pas. Jeanne has been a member of The Pas Legion Branch 19 for more than twenty-eight years. LALOR, George Thomas WWII George was born in Welwyn, Saskatchewan on March 17, 1920. He was the oldest of four sons and one daughter born to Patrick and Myrtle Lalor of Pine Falls, Manitoba. In the spring of 1940, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force as an air gunner and for the next three years, served in many theatres of war from Canada through Europe to the Far East. George also flew for Britain’s Royal Air Force and the Royal Australian Air Force until June 1943, when after a mission with the Royal Canadian Air Force, he was invalided back to Canada, where life for him became an interminable round of hospitals. This ended in 1949 when times were happy and productive. George has written many books, received many awards, and is widely known for his works. He was a member of Pine Falls Legion Branch 64 before he passed away on July 25, 2008. LAMBERT, Evert W. WWII Evert was born in Teulon, Manitoba in 1916 and passed away in 2005. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served with North Atlantic Squadron 162 and 7 Bombing and Reconnaissance in Canada, Iceland, in the North Pacific and on the High Seas. Evert was a member of Stonewall Legion Branch 52 and Hodgson Legion Branch 158 for a total of fifty-nine years. LAMB, Robert Duncan WWII Robert was born in 1924 in MacGregor, Manitoba. He joined the Canadian Navy at HMCS Chippawa and was drafted to an aircraft carrier on the west coast, the HMS Puncher (complement 850). He was part of a strike force that addressed the problems of attacks on shipping lanes, the laying of mines, and torpedoing along the Norwegian coast. His ship was in dry dock in Greenock, Scotland on V-E Day. Robert left for Halifax, where he was discharged six months later. He has been a member of Portage la Prairie Legion Branch 65 for more than fifty years.
