He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in Winnipeg in 1940 and was sent to #2 Manning Depot in Brandon, Manitoba for basic training. From there, he was stationed at the Brandon Training School, then was sent to Vancouver and Calgary for wireless training. After a bad case of sinusitis, he was grounded from flying. He worked as a clerk stenographer in Toronto, then shipped to Souris’ Air Force Base. His next transfer was to Suffield, Alberta, where he was under strict orders to never divulge information about his job. Experiments on biological and chemical defence run by scientists from all allied countries were carried out at this base. Harold spent eight months at Suffield and was discharged in 1945. Articles were later written about Suffield and the experiments carried out there, as well as stories about the men who suffered from medical problems in later years. Harold married Aileen Lovatt of Souris and has been a member of Souris Legion Branch 60 for more than fifty-seven years. LOVELOCK, Dennis W. “Denny” WWII Denny was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1923. He joined the Army in August 1940 and served with the Lord Strathcona Horse (Royal Canadians) in Canada, England, Italy, and Northwest Europe during WWII. Denny was Mentioned in Dispatches. He died in 1982. LYNCH, Wilbur Howard WWII Wilbur was born on April 7, 1923 in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. He enlisted in the Canadian Army in 1941 in Winnipeg and served with the Winnipeg Grenadiers in Canada and Hong Kong during WWII. Wilbur was taken prisoner in Hong Kong and weighed only 118 pounds when liberated. According to him, no one who survived a Japanese prisoner of war camp was ever the same on release. Wilbur has been a member of The Royal Canadian Legion in Edmonton for a number of years. LUMGAIR, Robert O. WWII Robert was born in Thornhill, Manitoba in 1919. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and trained as a wireless operator, air gunner and winch operator, “B” Type, serving mostly with 708 Squadron in Linton-on-Ouse in England. Robert was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for action on a mission over Hanover, Germany on October 18, 1943. He is a member of Morden Legion Branch 11 and an associate member of Pilot Mound Branch.
