167 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca NEWSHAM, Richard C. WWI & WWII Richard was born in 1892 in Birtle, Manitoba. He enlisted on July 15, 1915 and served as a marksman with the 78th Battalion, Winnipeg Grenadiers in England, and in France at Vimy Ridge and Passchendaele. Private Newsham received the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. Discharged on June 12, 1919, he married Evelyn Robbie on November 1, 1922 and they raised three children. Richard farmed until he joined the RCAF on April 29, 1941, and served in Canada with Service Police. He was stationed at MacDonald and Rivers, MB and Penhold, AB, and helped close Stevenson Air Force Base in Winnipeg. Honourably discharged on November 29, 1946 in Lachine, QC, Corporal Newsham received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the War Medal 1939-45. He became a private detective. Richard, a member of Birtle Legion Branch 152 for twenty-nine years, died on July 2, 1968. Evelyn received the Silver Cross in “appreciation of the sacrifice she had made”. She passed away in 1990 and is buried beside him in Chapel Memorial Lawn Gardens in Winnipeg. NICHOLSON, Elwood R. WWII Elwood was born in 1928 in Tompkins, Saskatchewan. He enlisted in the Reserves in Swift Current in 1943 and later joined active duty in Regina in July 1944. He was posted to A27 RECCE in Dundurn, Saskatchewan, where his troop completed general training, then transferred to Calgary for advanced infantry training and trade school in Hamilton on a driver’s mechanic course, motor transport/track. After posting to Woodstock for driver training, he returned to Calgary, where he became a Group “C” operator on a Bren gun carrier. Elwood was home on leave when VE Day occurred on May 8. Back in Calgary, he volunteered for the Canadian Army Pacific Force, received the Pacific Force Patch, and was sent to Vernon, BC for formation. August 15, VJ Day, resulted in the disbandment of his unit. Trooper Nicholson returned to Regina to be honourably discharged in October 1945. He was awarded the War Medal 1939-45 and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. He has been a member of Pine Falls Legion Branch 64 for over eighteen years. NIELD, Lewis R. M. “Mickey” WWII Mickey was born in Silver Creek, Manitoba in 1922. He enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force in Winnipeg in December 1942 and served with 433 Squadron. Mickey was discharged in Winnipeg in October 1945 after having served in Canada and the United Kingdom. NICOL, Alex WWII Alex was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on March 8, 1920. He enlisted in the Army and served in the British West Indies and Northwest Europe with the Irish Fusiliers of the Royal Westminster Regiment. Alex was a member of Selkirk Legion Branch 42. He died in 1996.
