29 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca BOWSER (nee WHITE), Evelyn J. PEACETIME Evelyn was born in 1934 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She joined the Royal Canadian Air Force on November 6, 1952 in Thunder Bay, Ontario and served in Canada. Evelyn had lost all her things in a barrack block fire but friends lent her clothes and encouraged her to go to the canteen. While there, she met Perry, who was on duty cleaning tables. They met at the canteen quite a few times. Perry was transferred to Camp Borden and Evelyn was sent to Foymont, Ontario. One day, she received a parcel in the mail containing a diamond ring and a marriage proposal from Perry. After months of letters, they were married in Barrie, Ontario. They celebrated 50 years of marriage before Perry passed away. Evelyn has been a member of Portage la Prairie Legion Branch 65 for more than five years. BOWSER, Perry H. PEACETIME Perry was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1930. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served in Canada. Perry met his future wife, Evelyn, while he was on duty cleaning tables in a canteen and they later met there quite a few times. Perry was a member of Portage la Prairie Legion Branch 65 for twenty-nine years before he passed away in 2006. He was the recipient of the 12-Year Medal and the 25-Year Medal for his years of service. BOYD, John Marshall WWII John was born in Fairfax, Manitoba on July 24, 1916. He worked on the farm with his father and brother until he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force. Posted to Regina, he graduated from “A” Flight #1 Training Squadron on July 19, 1940, went overseas, and on August 19, 1941, was stationed at Leeming, Yorkshire with the 77 Squadron RAF as Sergeant Wireless Op. Air-Gunner. On a raid over Germany on October 31, 1941, Flight Sergeant Boyd’s plane was hit and they went down over Kiel, Germany. The bodies of the crew were re-interred one and a half miles east in the Kiel British Military Cemetery, Grave #9, Row J, Plot 3. BOYCE, Almer Fulford WWII Almer was born in Libau, Manitoba on November 5, 1920. He enlisted in the Army at Port Arthur, Ontario on January 14, 1942 and served as a Private with the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps. He transferred to England several months later and served as a machinist in France and Germany. Almer received the Defence Medal, the 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp and the King George VI. Almer was discharged on March 13, 1946 and returned to Selkirk, Manitoba, where he lived for the remainder of his life. He was a Life Member of Selkirk Legion Branch 42 for fifty years and he died in 2002.
