141 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca McLEAN, Frederick G. “Bud” WWII & PEACETIME Bud was born in Virden, Manitoba on May 10, 1923. He joined the 12th Manitoba Dragoons (N.P.A.M.) in Virden on May 8, 1940 and transferred to Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians) on March 24, 1941. Bud served in Canada and England and participated in bloody battles in Italy and Northwest Europe, where he was awarded the A.V.C., the Distinguished Service Order, DC and Military Medal. In September 1944, Bud was awarded the Military Medal for bravery in the field, a medal presented to him by King George VI at Buckingham Palace in 1945. He volunteered for the Pacific war theater, was discharged, but re-enlisted in the 12th Manitoba Dragoons as R.S.M., serving until his discharge in 1956. In 1953, he attended the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, representing Manitoba’s Armoured Corps and the Lakehead area. He also represented the Regiment on pilgrimages to Italy and Holland and made two Italian pilgrimages to Italy with his son. Bud has been a member of Horton Legion Branch 285 for more than thirty-five years. McLEAN (nee IZZARD NEILSON), Kathleen C. WWII Kathleen was born in 1924 in Pilot Mound, Manitoba. She joined the Canadian Women’s Army Corps and served in Canada during WWII. Kathleen has been a member of Pilot Mound Legion Branch 62 for over thirty-eight years. McLEAN, Roy J. E. WWII & SPECIAL DUTY AREA Roy was born in Morden, Manitoba in 1926. From 1942, he served in the Army with the Special Service Force and in 1946, with Royal Canadian Horse Artillery, Light Airborne in the Pacific, Mediterranean, Northwest Europe, Canada and the United States. Roy was a member of Fort Garry Legion Branch 90 and Morden 11 for twenty-three years before he passed away in 1996. McLEAN, Robert Burns “Bob” WWII Bob was born on March 25, 1916 on a farm in the Londesboro District near Pilot Mound, Manitoba. In 1941, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served as an airplane mechanic in St. Thomas, Ontario and Bagotville, Quebec. During the war, on May 5, 1943, Bob married Janet M. Hyslop. After discharge, he operated a grain and cattle farm until health issues arose and they retired to Pilot Mound, where he was employed at the local Credit Union. Bob and Janet enjoyed several winters in the south. He was a member of Pilot Mound Legion Branch 62 before passing away on December 27, 1987 of a heart attack. Janet died on November 29, 1988.
