143 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca McMILLAN, Gordon W. WWII Gordon was born in Deerhorn, Manitoba in 1916. He joined the Royal Canadian Army and served in the Provost Corps in Europe during World War II. Gordon died in 1976. McMILLAN, Patrick J. WWII Patrick was born in Deerhorn, Manitoba in 1915. He joined the Army and served with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry in Europe and Italy. He was awarded the War Medal 1939-45, the Defence Medal, the Italy Star, the 1939-45 Star, and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. Patrick was a member of Ashern Legion Branch 57 before he died in 1982. McQUAKER, Andrew T. WWII Andrew was born on January 22, 1921 in Rainy River, Ontario, where he lived and farmed with his parents most of his years. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Artillery in May 1942 at Fort William, Ontario and served in Canada, the United Kingdom, Continental Europe and in the Central Mediterranean area. Andrew was discharged in November 1945. On his return from the service, he married and worked for the Canadian National Railway at Rainy River until he retired in 1986. He passed away on July 17, 2001 at the age of 80. Andrew was not a Legion member. McMULLEN, John Bigley “Jack” WWII Jack was born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia on May 16, 1924. At seventeen, Jack studied at St. Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia with the Canadian Officers Training Corps. He was attached to the Royal Canadian Air Force of the Air Cadet unit. In 1942, he made the final move and enlisted in the active service of the Royal Canadian Air Force. He took his basic training at the Manning Depot in Toronto, Ontario and after that, was posted to Mount Pleasant, Prince Edward Island to train as an air gunner with the 96 Squadron. The schedule of instruction extended the time to VE Day on May 8, 1945. He was sent to Halifax for dismissal subject to recall and later, summoned back for permanent discharge. Jack is now happily retired, living in the Pineview Lodge in Pine Falls, Manitoba. He is a member of Pine Falls Legion Branch 64.
