105 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca KUKURA, Michael WWII Michael enlisted in the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry in Winnipeg in September 1939 and served in England, Sicily, and Italy. Sergeant Kukura was discharged in May 1945 in Winnipeg. Michael was a member of Russell Legion Branch 159 before he passed away. LAIDLAW (nee BRADFORD), Christine A. “Chris” WWII Chris was born in 1928 in Cartwright, Manitoba. She enlisted in the Canadian Women’s Army Corps in 1944 and trained in Winnipeg, Manitoba and Kitchener, Ontario. Chris was posted to Long Pointe Depot in Montreal, Quebec and served on the ordnance crew. She was demobbed two years later in February 1946. Chris married Calvin Bradford in 1950 and they had one daughter. Cal passed away and Chris still resides in Brandon, Manitoba. She has been a member of British Columbia’s Trail Legion Branch 11 and Brandon Legion Branch 3 for a total of sixty-four years. LAIDLAW, Herman James WWII Herman was born in 1922 in Cartwright, Manitoba. He joined the Cameron Highlanders in 1942, trained in Portage la Prairie and Shilo, then was stationed in England from 1943 until July 1944 when he was sent to France’s front lines. Herman was wounded when cleaning out fox holes, and after recovering in England, was wounded again by shrapnel, which worked its way to the surface for many years. He was discharged in March 1946. Herman was awarded the 193945 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with the Dieppe Bar, the War Medal 1939-45, and Holland’s Thank You Canada 1945 Medal. He got married in 1949 after taking up farming in 1946. He farmed until he passed away in 2004 at the age of 82. Herman was a member of Cartwright Legion Branch 86 for forty-four years. LAIDLAW, Ernest J. “Ernie” WWII Ernie was born in 1923 in Cartwright, Manitoba. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in January 1942, trained in Guelph, Ontario, and was deployed overseas to England in 1944. He served with the ground crew in his squadron and was repatriated in March 1946. Ernie had been a member of Cartwright-Mather Legion Branch 86 before he passed away in 1987.
