197 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca SECORD, Richard Henry WWII Richard was born in 1922 in rural Dauphin, Manitoba, where he also received his education. He farmed in the same area before he joined the Army’s Royal Winnipeg Rifles Division, #10 District Infantry Corps to serve in Canada, England and Europe during WWII. In recognition of his service, Richard received the France and Germany Star. After his discharge, he farmed in the rural Dauphin area. He and his wife Jean (Smith) raised two sons. Richard died in 1999. SHACKLEFORD, Dennis W. WWII Dennis was born in Arden, Manitoba in 1925. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy and served in Outremont and Victoriaville, Quebec in the Western Atlantic (Triangle Run). Dennis has been a member of Selkirk Legion Branch 42 for more than nineteen years. SHARPE, George E. WWII George was born in Carman, Manitoba in 1920. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force and took his basic training at Rivers, Manitoba. He was later stationed at the terminal docks in Vancouver and afterwards, reposted to Patricia Bay on Vancouver Island. In England, he was stationed at the Canadian Base at Skipton-on-Swale with Squadron 410. During the winter months, George, a capable hockey player, entertained with the likes of Turk Broda and Sid Able at different hockey events. They competed amongst the very few teams available in England and Scotland during those hard times. He was repatriated back to Canada and volunteered for the war in Japan with his brother Bill. They were stationed in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia but the war ended before he was deployed to the Pacific conflict. George served from November 1941 until his discharge in September 1945. He was a Life Member of Pine Falls Legion Branch 64 for forty-three years before he died in 1988. SHANNON, Robert J. WWII Robert was born in Indus, Minnesota in 1925. He joined the Canadian Army and served with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles in Canada, England, Europe, and Holland. Robert has been a Life Member of Atikokan Legion Branch 145 for over sixty-two years.
