65 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca FIELDS, Lance E. R. WWII Lance was born in Alexander, Manitoba in 1917. He joined the Army in 1940 and became a member of the Royal Winnipeg Rifles (Little Black Devils). He trained at Shilo, MB, Dubuque, ON and England. He went into action on D-Day at Normandy and fought in France, Holland, and Germany. Some of the battles he took part in were at Caen, Carpiquet, Bourguebus Ridge, Falaise, and Moyland Woods. He received many service medals, including the Carpiquet Memorial. Lance was severely burnt on April 18, 1945 and spent many months in hospitals in England and Canada, suffering through numerous reconstructive surgeries. Lance was a member of Souris Legion Branch 60 for fifty years before he passed away on May 29, 2009. He is buried in the Alexander Cemetery in Souris. FINLAY, Milton Roy WWII Milton was born on April 2, 1919, twelve miles south of Deloraine, Manitoba. During WWII, he failed two medicals before being accepted in the Army in 1942. He trained at Portage la Prairie and Brandon, Manitoba, Terrace and Prince Rupert, British Columbia, as well as in Ontario. Milton went to Canterbury, England with the 2nd Division Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders early in 1943. He landed in France in July 1944 and went through Caen, Falaise, Antwerp and Nijmegen. Wounded between Nijmegen and Arnhem in 1945, he was in hospital on VE Day. After Sergeant Finlay’s discharge in February 1946, he first farmed at Goodlands, Manitoba until 1968 then at Souris, Manitoba from 1969-2008. He married in November 1946 and was father to five children. Widowed in 2008, Milton now resides in Boissevain, Manitoba. Milton has been a member of Waskada, Goodlands and Souris Legion Branches for over sixty-three years. FORD, Stanley H. WWII Stanley enlisted in the Canadian Army in Winnipeg in October 1941 and was discharged there in October 1945. He served as a Staff Sergeant in Canada and Labrador and was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp. Stanley has been a member of Russell Legion Branch 159. FORBES, Kathleen L. SPECIAL DUTY AREA Kathleen was born in Ochre River, Manitoba in 1932. She joined the Royal Canadian Air Force on June 1, 1951 in Brandon, then completed her basic training at Manning Depot in Quebec. She continued training at various schools, including the 1 Radio & Communications School in Clinton, Ontario to become a teletype operator. Posted to Uplands, near Ottawa, Kathleen worked in the message centre until July 1953. As NATO was sending fighter squadrons to Europe and needed personnel to staff the communications centres on each of the 4 (F) Wings in Germany and France, she was at 4 Wing Baden Soellingen in Germany for two years. With one year left to serve, she returned to Canada and was stationed as a teletype operator at the Portage la Prairie Flying Training School for NATO pilots. Corporal Forbes was awarded the Special Service Medal in recognition of her service in support of NATO. She has been a member of Dauphin Legion Branch 20 for five years.
