159 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca MOWBRAY, Colin Thomas WWII Colin was born north of Cartwright, Manitoba in 1910. He enlisted on October 21, 1941 in Winnipeg, where he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. He was the second person chosen to be a pilot but after his medical, discovered he was colour blind. Corporal Mowbray was stationed in St. Thomas, Ontario, where he was part of the Technical Training Services Unit and taught air force mechanics. Following his discharge in May 1945, Colin worked as a mechanic and farmed north of Cartwright. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the War Medal 1939-45. He was a member of the Cartwright-Mather Legion Branch 86 for fortyseven years and was a Past President. He died in Cartwright in November 1991. MOWBRAY, Robert WWII Robert was born in 1911 in the North Derby district north of Cartwright, Manitoba. He attended school at North Derby and continued his high school at Cartwright. Robert joined the Royal Canadian Army in 1942 and was posted at Davidson, Saskatchewan and Lethbridge, Alberta during World War II. After the war, he returned to the family farm north of Cartwright with his wife Mary and their two children and he continued to farm there until his death in 1983. Robert was a member of Cartwright-Mather Legion Branch 86 for thirty-seven years. MUNRO, Kenneth W. WWII Kenneth was born in Oak Lake, Manitoba in 1922. He joined the Army in July 1940 and served in Canada, France, Germany, and Britain as a Lance Bombardier with the 4th Field Regiment Artillery. He was a POW from July 21, 1944 until 1945 after he was captured at the Battle of Verrières Ridge while supporting the 6th Brigade. He was first held at Stalag 12A, then at Stalag 4B, south of Berlin. He was made to work in a stone quarry. Kenneth received Service Medals and he has been a 50-year member of Russell Legion Branch 159. MUIR, William Leslie WWII William was born on December 20, 1904. He joined the 37th Field Battery of the 17th Field Regiment, Royal Canadian Army, 5th Canadian Armoured Division on August 2, 1940. He trained as a Bombardier at Shilo and Petawawa then sailed for England on November 13, 1941. On October 26, 1943, he embarked from Liverpool and landed in Naples, Italy on November 8. The unit fought their way northward against the Nazi Army through mountainous terrain. They were involved in fighting at Ortona, Cassino, the Gustav Line, Coriano, and the Gothic Line. In February 1945, the Regiment moved through France, Belgium, Netherlands, and Germany where the war ended. Discharged on October 18, 1945, he returned home to High Bluff. William died on November 17, 1977.
