He joined the Royal Canadian Army and served in Canada at Training Command during World War II. SABAD, Kenneth J. “Ken” SPECIAL DUTY AREA Ken was born in Killarney, Manitoba in 1938. He joined the Army in Winnipeg on November 2, 1955 and spent five years with the Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada before becoming a Physical Training Instructor from 1960-79. He had several postings in Calgary, AB, Victoria and Chilliwack, BC, Kingston and Petawawa, ON, Goose Bay, NL, Yorkton, SK, as well as with the United Nation’s Emergency Force in Germany (three years) and Egypt (six months). Sergeant Sabad was released in November 1979 and he spent fourteen years with Corrections Canada before retiring in 1994 to Souris, Manitoba. Ken has been a member of Souris Legion Branch 60 for more than seventeen years. SABISTON, Melvin L. WWII Melvin was born in Selkirk, Manitoba in 1930. He enlisted in Winnipeg on January 10, 1953 with the Lord Strathcona Horse (Royal Canadians) and served in Canada. He was transferred to Germany in September 1953, spent two years there, then returned to Winnipeg. After his discharge in 1956, he worked for the Town of Selkirk and retired in 1985. Melvin has been a member of Selkirk Legion Branch 42 for over fifty-five years. SABISTON, Leslie M. “Les” PEACETIME Les was born in Selkirk, Manitoba in 1951 to Melvin and Violet Sabiston. He enlisted in the Army in Winnipeg and served in Canada with the 1st Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. Les has been a member of Alberta’s Cold Lake Legion Branch 211 for forty years and now works at the Cold Lake Base as a civilian.
