He was with the Manitoba Mounted Rifles from 1939-41; the Lord Strathcona Horse (Royal Canadians) from 1941-46; the 26 Field Regiment from 1949-68; and the Cadets Services from 1969-77. He served in England, North Africa, Italy, France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany. Malcolm was a member of Portage la Prairie Legion Branch 65 before he died in 1996. BIRD, Victor C. WWI Victor was born in the United Kingdom. He enlisted in the Royal Army Service Corps in Norwich in 1915 and was discharged in London in April 1919. Private Bird served in Salonika and Egypt. He has been a member of Russell Legion Branch 159. BJARNARSON, George Leonard WWII Leonard was born in 1922 in the Rural Municipality of Westbourne. In October 1942, he enlisted in the RCAF in Winnipeg, then was posted to Manning Depot in Brandon in December for basic training. He then went to Souris, MB and Mossbank, SK, then in June 1943, was posted to Mont Joli, QC at the Gunnery School. Overseas, he was posted to the Scotland Operating Training Unit in Kinloss and to Driffield and to RAF station at Melbourne, York No. 10 Squadron. Their first OP was May 27, 1944 and after finishing their tour of 39 trips, he was posted to an OTU at Long Marston and put in charge of the turret section as an instructor for tail and mid-upper gunners. He returned to Montreal on August 18, 1945. In 1945, his pay rate was $7.00/day. His final pay for 46 days served in 1945 was $322. Leonard was a member of Gladstone Legion 110 for forty-five years before he passed away in 2000. BIRD, W. A. J. WWII W. Bird joined the Army in Dundurn, Saskatchewan in August 1940 and was discharged in Winnipeg in January 1946, serving in the Royal Canadian Dental Corps in Canada and England. Sergeant Bird received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp and has been a member of Russell Legion Branch 159.
