121 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca MADIGAN, John M. WWII John was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1924. During World War II, he joined the Royal Canadian Navy and served on the High Seas with HMCS La Hulloise. John has been a Life Member and Past President of Selkirk Legion Branch 42 for sixty years. MAHER, Clarence J. WWI Clarence was born in Newstead, Ontario in 1892. He enlisted in August 1914 and served in Canada, England, and France, where he was wounded in action, losing one limb. He was discharged in March 16. Private Maher was awarded the 191415 Star and the Victory Medal. Clarence has been a member of Russell Legion Branch 159. MALUK, Eugene WWII Eugene was born in March 1920 in Sandy Lake, Manitoba. He enrolled in the Canadian Officers Training Corps at the University of Saskatoon in June 1941 and enlisted in the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve. He served on HMCS Nipigon in Canada and overseas and was discharged in May 1945. Eugene returned home and married Helen Rystephanuk in October 1946 and they raised four children. In 1949, he became postmaster in Sandy Lake and held that position until his retirement in 1985. He was a Charter Member (1946) of Sandy Lake Legion Branch 184, served as Branch Secretary from 1958-1994, and was a member for forty-nine years. He enjoyed small town living and passed away in June 1995. MAKI, Lawrence D. WWII Lawrence was born in Redditt, Ontario in 1926. He joined the Navy and served aboard HMCS Cobourg in the North Atlantic during World War II. Lawrence was a member of Kenora Legion Branch 12 before he passed away in 2007.
