31 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca BRINKWORTH, Merle Bruce PEACETIME Merle was born in Baldur, Manitoba in 1932. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force on July 25, 1951 at Brandon, Manitoba and did his basic training in St. Jean, Quebec, his trade training in Aylmer, Ontario and then transferred to #3 Fighter Wing in Zweibrücken, Germany, where he provided support for three Fighter Squadrons from February 1953 to February 1955. Merle was transferred several times, namely to: Hamilton, ON (Mount Hope) for five years as support for Reserve Training Squadron; Moisie, QC Radar Station for five years; Falconbridge, ON until his release in July 1966. He received the Canadian Forces Decoration in 1963. After 15 years in the service, Merle bought a grocery store and later retired. He was living at Legion House II in Morden, Manitoba and has been a member of Morden Legion Branch 11 for more than forty-four years. BROGDEN, Robert Ross “Bob” WWII Bob was born on a farm near Cartwright, Manitoba on February 11, 1919 but a year later, on February 28, he lost his mother and three siblings in a tragic house fire. Until World War II, he worked on the family farm and other farms in the area. Bob enlisted in the Army in Winnipeg in January 1940 and was sent overseas after three months of training. The following three years were spent serving as a Private with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry in southern England. Bob was seriously wounded during a training exercise, as were four other soldiers. He died the following day, on April 25, 1943, and is buried in Brookwood Military Cemetery, southwest of London. In 1972, he was honoured by the naming of a lake after him in northern Manitoba. The lake is known as Brogden Lake. BROWN, George A. WWI George was born in 1892 in Buckie, County of Banff, Scotland. He joined the Army during WWI and served with the 79th Cameron Highlanders and transferred to the 43rd Cameron in France and Belgium. George was a Life Member of Hartney Legion Branch 26 before he died in 1987. BROUGH, William A. WWII William was born in Winnipegosis, Manitoba in 1918 and died in 1971. He joined the Army and served with the Royal Canadian Forestry Corps in France, Germany and Belgium. William was a member of Kenora Legion Branch 12.
