He joined the Canadian Navy and served as Petty Officer on the Prince David, mostly on the west coast near Alaska. He was awarded the regular service ribbons. He returned to farming then upgraded to become an engineer at Portage la Prairie Hospital. Ben passed away in 2006. NELSON, Charlie H. WWII Charlie was born into a pioneer family in Lily Bay, Manitoba in 1918. His ancestors came from Scotland (farmers) and England (military). During World War II, he joined the Royal Canadian Navy and did convoy duty on a Corvette, the Port Arthur, in the North Atlantic before serving on D-Day. Sea sickness and chipping ice were downsides but he enjoyed the comrades and cooking aboard ship. Besides the ribbons for service in named areas, he was also awarded the D-Day Medal. Following the war, he farmed with his brother, got married and raised four sons. Charlie died in 2003. NEWSHAM, Douglas Clarke SPECIAL DUTY AREA Douglas was born in 1931 in Birtle, Manitoba. He served as a Private with the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps from May 29, 1957 and was honourably released on September 23, 1964. While serving in Canada and Egypt, he was responsible for receiving, shipping, accounting, warehousing and warehouse planning of military stores. He received the United Nations Emergency Force Medal. After leaving the Army, the family moved to the United States. He managed several stores and later was a car salesman in Las Vegas. He also served 15 years with The Royal Canadian Legion Post 13 in Gardena, California as Financial Officer. Douglas was an outstanding sportsman and coached youth in hockey and swimming. He married on February 21, 1953 and raised two sons. Douglas died on November 11, 1989 and both he and his wife are buried in Palm Valley View Memorial Park in Las Vegas, Nevada. NELSON, Herbert J. WWII Herbert was born on March 23, 1923 in Rainy River, Ontario. Prior to enlisting in the Army in 1940, he worked in the commercial fishing industry on Lake of the Woods and at Flinders Dairy at Fort Frances, Ontario. He enlisted in Winnipeg and took his basic training at Borden, Ontario and Shilo, Manitoba. Herbert served in Canada, England, France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany with the 1st Canadian Army, 66th Field Battery, 14th Field Regiment (SP), 3rd Division and was discharged in Winnipeg at the end of 1945. He then worked at odd jobs until he was hired on with C.N.R., where he had a lengthy career as an engineer until he retired in 1978. He and his wife Evelyn spent most of their time at their summer cottage on Lake of the Woods. Herbert was a Life Member and Past President of Major Hughes Legion Branch 54 for sixty-two years before he passed away on August 18, 2008 at age 85.
