He joined the Canadian Army and served as a Sergeant with “C” Force, 1st Battalion, Winnipeg Grenadiers in Canada, Jamaica and Hong Kong Legion Branch where he became a prisoner of war. Kenneth was a member of Portage la Prairie Legion Branch before he died in 1981. McCULLOCH, William Cox WWI & WWII William was born in 1898 in St. Andrews, Scotland. He joined the Imperial Army at age 16 and served in France with the King’s Liverpool Regiment from September 1914 to March 1919. He was wounded three times. He married an Irish-born nursing sister and they had two children. After the war, William was employed in England as a secretary of the Ministry of Pensions and Hospitals. He came to Canada in 1927 and lived in Oakville, Manitoba, where his civilian occupation was farming. In June 1940, William joined A15 CITC and the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry and served in Canada. Major McCulloch was a member of Portage la Prairie Legion Branch 65 for fifty-five years before he passed away in 1985. McDOWALL, Herbert Maxwell “Herb” WWII & PEACETIME Herb was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1920. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force on June 30, 1941 and served until July 16, 1970 in Canada, England, France, Holland, Germany, Middle East, and Washington, DC. After basic training, he spent six months with Bomber Command in England, then participated in the Normandy Invasion with the 2nd Tactical Air Force. He then moved into France and Holland, then crossed the Rhine into Germany, pushing the Germans back until the war ended. Warrant Officer McDowall returned to Canada in 1945 and served in NATO peacekeeping roles. He has been a member of Charleswood Legion Branch 100 for more than 40 years, was heavily involved in their Sports Program and was instrumental in raising funds to establish The Legion Memorial on Berkley to honour and remember Charleswood veterans. Herb was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp, the 1939-45 War Medal, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Forces Decoration with Clasp, the Peacekeeping Medal, and the UN Emergency Force Medal (UNGF). McDOUGALL, Leonide J. WWII Leonide was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1912 and passed away in 1996. Leonide served with the Army in the Princess Patricia’s unit in Canada, England and Northwest Europe. He has been a member of Fort Garry Legion Branch 90 for over fifty years.
