He joined the Royal Canadian Army and served during World War II in Hong Kong, where he became a Prisoner of War. Arthur was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion and he died on November 6, 1989. BETTS, Roy Harold WWII Roy was born in 1914 in Pine Falls, Manitoba. He joined the Canadian Navy and served as a Leading Seaman on HMCS Haida. He was killed in action in on August 6, 1944 at the age of 30. Roy is commemorated at Plymouth (Weston Mill) Cemetery in Devon, England. Betts Lake, northwest of Knife Lake, was named after him in 1974. BIRD, Everett Walter WWII Everett was born in 1919 in Petersfield, Manitoba. He joined the Canadian Army and served with the 17th Field Regiment in Italy, France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, and possibly North Africa. Everett was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion before he died in 1960. BIRD, Bertram John WWII Bertram was born in 1923 in Selkirk, Manitoba. He joined the Canadian Army and served during World War II with the 12th Manitoba Dragoons in England, France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany. In the April 4, 1946 edition of the London Gazette, Bertram was “Mentioned in Dispatch” for his distinguished service. He was a member of a Kitchener Legion Branch 50 as well as Portage la Prairie Legion Branch 65 in Manitoba. Bertram passed away in 2001.
