173 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca PASTUCK, Nicholson “Nick” WWII Nick was born in a family of ten on November 19, 1918 in Rainy River, Ontario. He worked on the family farm, went to school and spoke English and Ukrainian. In June 1941 at the age of 22, he enlisted with the Royal Winnipeg Rifleman Wing in Fort Frances, Ontario. He completed his basic training there, then was transferred to the Winnipeg Grenadiers, 1st Battalion, “C” Force Division. He sailed from Vancouver, British Columbia and arrived in Hong Kong on November 16, 1941 and on to battle. Hong Kong surrendered at Christmas. Private Pastuck became a POW and he died of Diphtheria on September 26, 1942 at age 23. He was buried in Sai Wan Military Hospital Cemetery, Grave 2, Row E, Plot 8 Hong Kong. Nick received four medals posthumously, which went to his father, Anthony. His Memorial Cross went to his mother, Dora. PATTERSON, David V. WWI David was born in Burridge, Ontario in 1893. He enlisted in the Army on December 26, 1915 in Souris, Manitoba and trained at Camp Hughes. He first served as a Private with the 226th Battalion, then with the 16th Battalion Canadian Scottish in France, where he was wounded on August 18, 1917 at Hill 70. He convalesced at Bearwood, England, was invalidated to Canada on March 11, 1918 and was then discharged a few months later on June 14. He returned to Manitoba, where he got married, farmed and raised 12 children. David was a member of Gladstone Legion Branch 110 for forty-six years. He died in 1985. PHIN, Charles A. WWI Charles was born in Moosomin, Saskatchewan in 1893. He joined the Canadian Army and served in England and France during WWI. Charles was a member of Pilot Mound Legion Branch 62 before he died in 1952. PHILLIPS, Sidney Hugh “Sid” WWII Sid was born in October 1914 on the family farm in Findlay, Manitoba. He enlisted in Winnipeg on March 19, 1943 and served with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry in Shilo, Manitoba. Sid was one of six sons of Matthew and Bertha Phillips to serve in WWII, and all returned safely. After serving in Canada, Sid was discharged on June 5, 1944 on a hardship leave to come home and run the family farm due to the illness and subsequent death of his father in July 1944. Sid married Joan Duncan in November 1947 and raised a family of three sons on the family farm. Sid and Joan retired to Souris in November 1978 and he passed away there in December 1997. He was a member of Souris Legion Branch 60 for fifty years.
