33 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca BROWN, Gordon E. PEACETIME Gordon was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1932. He joined the Army and served in Canada with the 26th Field Artillery, 71 Field Battery. Gordon has been a member of Pilot Mound Legion Branch 62 for more than thirty-seven years. BROWN (nee WINRAM), Kathrine A. SPECIAL DUTY AREA Kathrine was born in 1941 in Pilot Mound, Manitoba. She joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served in Canada in the Meteorology Division. BRUCE, James Robert BOER WAR, WWI & WWII James was born in Bradford, England in 1885. He joined the British Army and served in Africa during the Boer War from 1899-1901 then re-joined the British Army in World War I, serving with 52 Battalion in France, where he was wounded in action. He received the General Special Service Medal and the Victory Medal for “Special Instances of Gallant Conduct”. James came to Canada in 1919, joined the Canadian Army and served with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, Reserve #10 Detachment, and Royal Canadian Army Service Corps until 1921. In 1942, he joined the Veterans Guard of Canada, Expeditionary Force, was stationed in BC in New Westminster, then Bella Bella Island where he was a Guard in POW camps until his discharge in 1944. James received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal for service in WWII. He suffered complications from lung disease due to gas poisoning and the amputation of toes (trench foot) in WWI. Corporal Bruce was a member of Selkirk Legion Branch 42 and he died in 1956. BROWN, William WWII William was born in 1916 in Saltcoats, Scotland. He served during WWII with the Army’s Canadian Forestry Corps, 16th Company, serving in Scotland and Northwest Europe. William has been a member of Kenora Legion Branch 12 for more than sixty-seven years.
