163 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca MURRAY (nee ANDERSON), Wilma Doris WWII Wilma was born in Bangor, Saskatchewan in 1921. She served in the Women’s Division of the Royal Canadian Air Force in Canada and Britain during World War II. Wilma has been a member of Fort Garry Legion Branch 90 for more than thirty-six years. MUSTARD, Wendell H. WWI Wendell was born in Gladstone, Manitoba in 1896. During WWI, he joined the Army and served in France as a driver with 12th Canfield Ambulance. In Gladstone, he farmed, raised and raced Thoroughbred horses all his life. He was made Honourary Steward of the Man Horse Racing Commission before his death in 1986. Wendell is buried in Gladstone. He received a medal for playing ball and was also a member of Gladstone Legion Branch 110 for a number of years. NEEDHAM, Walter WWI Walter was born in 1888 in Mount Sorrel, Leicestershire, England. He enlisted in the Army in Winnipeg in January 1917 and served in France and Belgium as a Private with the Canadian Engineers in the 200th Battery. He was discharged in Winnipeg in October 1919. He was a member of Russell Legion Branch 159. MYLES, Howard Bruce WWII Howard was born in Kenora, Ontario around 1920. He joined the 5th Canadian Armoured Division and served in England, North Africa, Italy, and Holland during WWII. While in Italy, Howard was hospitalized with jaundice. After recovering, he was placed on light duty guarding a POW camp. One day on patrol, he was approached by a soldier who asked, “Hey Bud, which way to Salerno?” Howard pointed him in the right direction and resumed patrol. Then he did a double take, and turned around at the same time the other soldier did. It was his brother Bill. They talked a few minutes then resumed their duties. They didn’t see each other again until the end of the war. Howard was a member of Kenora Legion Branch 18 for fifty-six years before he died in 2001.
