135 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca McEACHEN, Gordon KOREA Gordon was born in Arcola, Saskatchewan on February 6, 1932. He worked for the CPR, then he enlisted with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry and served in Korea, which resulted in lifetime injuries. Until his retirement, he was employed at CFB Shilo in Manitoba. Gordon was an avid fisherman and was very active in youth hockey. Many of the young hockey players referred to him as “Uncle”. He was a member of Brandon Legion Branch 3 for fifty-one years and was also an active member of the Korean Veterans Association. Gordon passed away in the Brandon General Hospital on October 18, 2005. McENTEE, Donald R. “Don” WWII Don was born on August 11, 1909 in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. On June 24, 1940, he enlisted at Fairfax, Manitoba with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles and took part in the D-Day Invasion in Normandy on June 6, 1944. Sergeant McEntee also served in England and Germany. Don was a very active member of Souris Legion Branch 60, serving in a lot of offices, including Zone Commander and District Commander. Don and his wife Elva enjoyed attending many Legion conventions all across Canada. He received his 50-year Pin on July 5, 1998 and passed away a few weeks later on July 18. McFARLANE, William V. “Bill” KOREA & SPECIAL DUTY AREA William was born in Gainsborough, Saskatchewan in 1941 and was raised in Souris, Manitoba from the age of 4 to 18. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1960 and retired in 1988 as a Chief Petty Officer 2. He served with Maritime Command (Pacific Command) and Pacific Command on various ships in several areas, including Vietnam. He was awarded the Medal of Good Conduct and Bar and the Queen’s Medal. William and his wife Joan and their family reside in Victoria, British Columbia and he is a member of Prince Edward Legion Branch 91. His father was A. W. McFarlane (1918-1944) and he is a grandson of J. H. Forster (1882-1916). McFARLANE, Arthur William “Bill” WWII Bill was born in Gainsborough, Saskatchewan on April 3, 1918. He enlisted with the Royal Canadian Engineers and trained in Regina and Chilliwack, BC before shipping overseas in the Fall of 1943. Bill’s wife, Evelyn Forster, then brought their three children to Souris to live. Sapper McFarlane served with 7 Field Company in England then went to France, where he was killed in action on July 21, 1944 at the age of 26. He is buried at Bretteville-sur-Laize Canadian War Cemetery in Calvados, France. Bill was awarded the Battle of Britain Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, the War Medal 1939-45, and the Memorial Cross. He is the son-in-law of J. H. Forster (1882-1916).
