61 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca ENGLAND, Leslie W. WWII Leslie was born in Kenora, Ontario in 1915. During WWII, he served in the Navy as Chief Petty Officer on HMCS Halifax, Burlington, and Hepatica in Canada, Ireland, and on the coasts of the British Isles and France. Leslie has been a member of Kenora Legion Branch 12 for over sixty-five years. ENNS, Abraham Abram “Abe” WWII Abe was born in Tiegenhagen, Ukraine on June 10, 1919 and he immigrated with his family to a farm in LaSalle, MB when he was five years old. In January 1940, he joined the Canadian Army and then transferred to the Royal Canadian Air Force, where he trained as an Aero engine mechanic and air framer at Brandon and Rivers, MB and in St. Thomas, ON. As part of Squadrons 426 and 432, he served in England and France for two and a half years on the “wimpy” Halifax and Lancaster bombers. Abe was promoted from AC1 to LAC to Shadow CPL A Group, and discharged in October 1945. He married Emma Magarrell on June 5, 1946, farmed in Domain, Manitoba, and raised five children. He supplemented their farm income by custom combining in Canada and the U.S. and installing and repairing furnaces. He was also highly regarded as a mentor and hockey coach. Abe was a member of Domain Legion Branch 208 for fifty-one years before he died on April 28, 1998. ERICKSON, Norman G. WWII Norman was born in Radville, Saskatchewan in 1916. He joined the Canadian Army and served in Canada with an Infantry unit during WWII. Norman has been a member of the Kenora Legion Branch 12 for over sixty-five years. ERICKSON, Gilbert WWII Gilbert was born on December 11, 1919. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941 and served in Brandon and Winnipeg, Manitoba and was a member of the RCAF Band until 1945. Gilbert died on February 16, 1985.
