His passing has marked The End of an Era. It is our honour to recognize those who served their country and it is The Legion’s duty to keep their memories alive. With this I am very pleased to present our very first Military Service Recognition Book from the Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario Command. 7 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca ABERCROMBIE, William C. WWII Bill was born on December 3, 1902, in Scotland and came to Canada in April 1928 and joined the Army at Grandview in April 1941. He was stationed at Shilo, Manitoba, and served in Canada, England, France, Holland, Belgium and Germany. Unable to meet the required military physical standards because of sickness, he was airlifted back to Winnipeg, MB. On June 15, 1945, Bill was given an honourable discharge from the service and was a member of the Grandview Legion Branch #14 for 40 years. He passed away on August 14, 1986 and is buried in the Grandview Cemetery. ABREY, Donald L. WWII Donald was born in Dauphin, Manitoba, in 1925. He enlisted with the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion in February 1943, and served in Belgium, Holland, Canada, Germany and France. His basic training was at Portage La Prairie and at Shilo, MB. He went overseas in February 1944, and took extra training in Manchester, England. The 1st Battalion signed up for service in Japan, but due to V. J. Day they did not go. In December 1945, Donald signed up to drop supplies for a group of snowmobilers who were testing in the Arctic. He received his discharge in June 1946 and moved to Vancouver in 1948, where he spent 25 years installing and resurfacing bowling lanes in the area. He and his wife, Ann Bazylo, raised one son and one daughter and they presently reside in Dauphin, MB, and is a member of the Dauphin Branch #20 of The Royal Canadian Legion for the past three-and-half years. ADAIR, William T. WWII William was born in Oxbow, Saskatchewan, in 1918 and enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force in Regina, Saskatchewan, and served in Canada, England, India and Burma. He passed away in 2001 and was a member of Souris Branch #60 The Royal Canadian Legion. ACORN, William D. WWI William joined the 8th Royal Winnipeg Rifles Battalion and was killed in action in 1921. No additional information is available.

9 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca AIKENHEAD, Lloyd WWII Lloyd was born on December 23, 1916, at Wellwood, Manitoba, and was schooled at Wellwood and Altamont from 1920-1927, and Neelin from 1927-1939. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941 as a Navigator-Gunner-Observor-Pilot. In 1942, while in Holland on patrol over the North Sea, he was shot down in waters near Den-Helder and all four crew perished. His body was later found washed up on the shore. Lloyd is buried at Delfzizl, Netherlands. He was married to Muriel Bell of Baldur, MB, who passed away in 2009. Lloyd never saw his son Larry. Lloyd and his brothers, Wayne and Allan, were also pilots in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War Two. ALCOCK, Arthur A. A. WWII Arthur was born in Souris, Manitoba, in 1918. He was killed in action on June 17, 1942, at age 22. He was with #24 Operational Training Unit (Cum Labore Ajuvantes). His Whitlux Aircraft crashed while landing at Honeybourne, England. Six members of the crew were killed (not Canadians). Sergeant Wireless Operator Air Gunner Alcock is buried in the Evesham Cemetery in Worcestershire, England. Alcock Lake in Northern Manitoba is named after him. ALFORD, William WWII & PEACETIME William was born in Coventry, England, in 1922 and joined the Royal Warwicks Kings African Rifles serving in Britain and East Africa. ALEXANDER, Charles F. WWII Charles was born in Raymond, Ontario, in 1904 and joined the Royal Canadian Engineers B-55074 serving in England and Italy. He passed away in 1985 and had been a Life Member of the Robert Frost Branch #133 of The Royal Canadian Legion for 35 years.

He enlisted in Winnipeg on May 18, 1915, with the 44th and 29th Infantry Battalions C.E.F. and served in France and Belgium. He was discharged on February 11, 1917, and received the Victory and Service Medals. George passed away in 1964 and was a member of the Russell Branch #159 of The Royal Canadian Legion. ALLISON, Josephine WWII Josephine was born in Toronto, Ontario, in 1922 and joined the WRENS and served in Canada, Newfoundland and overseas. ALMERS, William H. WWII William was born on January 5, 1922, at Morson, Ontario, and enlisted at Fort William, Ontario, in 1941 with the Winnipeg Grenadiers at age 18 and re-enlisted in October 1942 at 19 with the North Nova Highlanders (Field Medical) with basic training at Shilo, Manitoba, and served in the Aleutians Islands, Canada, England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. As a field medic, he was critically wounded in Holland and flown to the 25th Canadian General Hospital via Wales. He rejoined his unit at Neinmegan, Holland and finished his battle tour in Germany. William was discharged on January 31, 1946, at Fort Garry, Winnipeg, and worked on Lake of the Woods as a ship Captain for 48 years hauling freight and tourists. He’s been a member of the Major Hughes Branch #54 of The Royal Canadian Legion for over 18 years. William is now 88 years old. ALLISON, Mathew M. O. WWII Mathew was born in Scotland in 1918 and joined the Navy serving on the High Seas. He passed away in 1977.

He joined the 79th Battalion Expeditionary Forces and transferred to the 1st Canadian Rifles serving in France and Flanders. John won a military medal for bravery at Vimy Ridge. He passed away in 1965. ALVIS, Roy E. WWII Roy was born in Boissevain, Manitoba, in 1921. He joined the Signal Corps serving in Canada, England and Holland. He has been a member of the Boissevain Branch #10 of The Royal Canadian Legion for 36 years. AMY, Thomas C. WWII Thomas was born in R.M. of Rockwood in 1918. He joined the Picton Highlanders serving in Canada and Bermuda with the rank of Corporal. He took his basic training in Portage la Prairie before being assigned to the Highlanders in the Maritimes and stationed in Bermuda. Taking advantage of the opportunity to upgrade himself through courses offered to servicemen, Tom received diplomas in Horticulture and Agriculture. Upon his discharge, Tom and his wife, Eleanor, purchased their farm through the VLA. He was a successful farmer for many years and was offered a position as Head Gardener for the base in Winnipeg after his retirement. Tom passed away in 2001 and was a Life Member of Brant-Argyle Branch #222 of The Royal Canadian Legion for 53 years and served his community proudly, as he did his country. AMY, Russell Cedric Lyndon WWII Russell was born on August 19, 1921, in Manitou, Manitoba. He was the second child of Norma and Fred Amy and grew up in Darlingford, Manitoba. He joined the Air Force in 1941 and began his military career at Ryerson University in Toronto, training as a radar mechanic. Once he finished his course, he was shipped to England where he spent his war years. Russ returned to Darlingford after the war and married Edith Anning of Manitou on May 10, 1947. They made their home in Darlingford and operated both a mink ranch and an electrical/plumbing business. They moved to an apartment in Morden, Manitoba, in 2007 and raised three children: Brent, Joan and Jan. Russ and Edith have six grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Russ has been a member of the Manitou Branch #21 of The Royal Canadian Legion for 23 years.

He enlisted in the Canadian Army in Winnipeg at Military District #10. He served in Canada, England and the low countries of Europe. Unfortunately, Carl died overseas on October 27, 1944, in Belgium on the day his English war bride arrived in Winnipeg from England. His final service was in Belgium, where at the age of 26, he was interned in the Adegem Canadian War Cemetery, Maldegem, Belgium. Carl was the son of Mr. & Mrs. Ivor Emmanul Anderson and husband of Betty Anderson. Carl Anderson Island in Bear Lake was named after him in 1995. ANDERSON, Edwin A. WWI Edwin was born in Deloraine, Manitoba, in 1888. He went overseas with the 79th Battalion and into battle with the 85th Nova Scotia Highlanders. He slept in the Vimy Ridge tunnel on his way to Passchendaele where he was wounded. He served in England, France, Belgium and Passchendaele. On a return visit to Vimy Ridge area in 1968, he was deeply touched on entering the tunnel. Edwin was a member of the Prince Edward Branch #81 of The Royal Canadian Legion before he passed away in 1977. ANDREWS, Francis J. W. WWII Francis was born in Shoal Lake, Manitoba, in 1920. He joined the Winnipeg Grenadiers serving in Jamaica, Bermuda and Hong Kong. Francis was a POW at the Battle of Hong Kong on December 25, 1941, and placed in Camp North Point Kowloon, China, and later moved to Fukuoka, Japan, Camp Omine. He was liberated by American Forces on August 28, 1945. Francis passed away in 2000 and had been a member of the Birtle Branch #55 of The Royal Canadian Legion for over 50 years. ANDERSON, Robert R. WWI Robert was born in Greenway, Manitoba, in 1888. He joined the #18 Mounted Rifles, 78th Battalion and the #90 Winnipeg Rifles, serving in England and France. Robert was a member of the Boissevain Branch #10 of The Royal Canadian Legion. He passed away in 1971.

He joined the Royal Canadian Engineers, serving in the UK and Continental Europe. He received the 1939-45 Star, the France/Germany Star and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal & Clasp. He passed away on July 29, 1993 and was a member of the Elizabeth Branch #106 of The Royal Canadian Legion in Reston, MB, for 39 years. ARCHER, Elmer Raymond WWII Elmer was born in Dauphin, Manitoba, in 1924. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1943 graduating as a pilot in 1945. In 1948, he graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce Degree from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, BC. He opened and operated the “Archer Riding Academy” in Dauphin and then moved the business to Clear Lake, MB. In 1951, Elmer rejoined the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Flying Officer in the accounting branch and retired as Wing Commander in 1975. He and his wife, Lucienne Hertig, raised two sons and two daughters and they presently reside in North Vancouver, BC. ARCHER, Kenneth Harold PEACETIME Kenneth was born in Dauphin, Manitoba, in 1929. He joined the 53rd Field Regiment and served in Canada. He received his education at the Dauphin Collegiate Institute and worked at the Dauphin Hatcheries and was later employed in Hamilton, Ontario, with the Canada Steel Company. Kenneth began his employment with the Canadian National Railway in 1948, retiring in 1984 as a Carload Manager. His years with the CNR took him to various locales throughout Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario. Kenneth and his wife, Gilberta Haller, raised three sons and three daughters and resided in Dauphin, MB. He has been a member of the Dauphin Branch #20 of The Royal Canadian Legion for 19 years. ARCHER, Eric S. WWII Eric was born in Binscarth in 1917 and signed up with the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1940 as an airframe mechanic and was sent to school for 18 weeks. On April 18, 1941, he enlisted and was sent to SFIS Brantford, the initial training depot and was then sent to St. Thomas, which was the Canadian Technical School for four months. He went overseas in December 1941, and spent some time in the south of England and the Shetland Islands in Scotland. Eric came home in 1944, and was discharged in January 1945. He passed away in 2000 and had been a member of Branch #55 of The Royal Canadian Legion for 56 years.
