135 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca KREWIAK, Michael WWII Michael was born in St. Clements, Manitoba, east Selkirk, in 1922. He joined the Lake Superior Regiment serving in Canada, England and Europe. Michael is a member of Selkirk Branch #42 of The Royal Canadian Legion. LAING, George WWII George was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in 1917 and joined the C.I.C. M.D. 10 serving in Canada. He passed away in 1998 and was a member of Russell Branch #159 of The Royal Canadian Legion. LAUGHLIN, MacKay Hugh WWII MacKay was born in Cartwright, Manitoba, in 1919. He joined the Air Force in 1938 as part of a ground crew, but later trained as a pilot. Overseas, he was placed in Ferry Command ferrying wounded men from nursing stations in France back to England sometimes having to fly through flack but unable to fly higher because the men needed oxygen. Squadron leader MacKay flew personnel, including Count Bernodotte to peace negotiations and attended some of the Nuremberg trials. Posted back in Trenton, Ontario, Hugh was in charge of the Canadian Search and Rescue (West). He retired from the Air Force in 1968 and joined the War Time Pilots Association, now defunct, in Winnipeg, and retiring back to Cartwright. Hugh has been a member of Branch #86 of The Royal Canadian Legion for five years. LAMBERT, Evert W. WWII Evert was born in Teulon, Manitoba, in 1916. He joined the #7 Bombing and Reconnaissance - North Pacific, North Atlantic Squadron #162, serving in Canada, Iceland and the High Seas. His normal duties were surveillance for enemy submarines or ships and escorting convoys enroute across the Atlantic. While heading back to Iceland after refit, he crashed in the Arctic. The crash was caused by icing and the plane blew up from split gas tanks. A rescue plane came for them and also crashed. A Sikorski helicopter was brought in from New York, in parts, reassembled and took them out one by one. This was the first Arctic rescue by a Sikorski. Evert received the Wireless Air Gunner’s Badge, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the Pacific Star, the North Atlantic Star and the 19391945 Star. He passed away in 2005 and had been a member of Stonewall Branch #52 of The Royal Canadian Legion for 59 years.
