125 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca JEFFREY, Alton E. WWII Alton was born on a farm northwest of Grandview, Manitoba, in 1924. He joined the Army in 1943, at age of 19, and trained as an infantryman at Fort Garry in Winnipeg, MB, and at Camp Shilo near Brandon, MB. In 1944, Alton joined the Regina Rifles in France as reinforcement and was active in the Liberation of Holland. He spent a year in the occupation of Germany with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles. Following his return to Canada, Alton married, farmed and became an accomplished carpenter. He and his wife raised a family of three children and they now reside in the Personal Care Home in Grandview, Manitoba. Jeffrey is a Life Member of Grandview Branch #14 of The Royal Canadian Legion. JEWELL, Wellington WWII Wellington was born in Emo, Ontario, on August 15, 1911. He joined the Highland Infantry of Canada, serving in Canada, England and Europe. He was wounded in Bologna, France, on September 14, 1944, and was discharged in April 1945, due to his injuries. Wellington received the 1939-1945 Star, the France/Germany Star, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, and the War Medal 1939-1945. He passed away on July 5, 1948. JOYCE, Garnet C. R. WWII Garnet was born in Birtle, Manitoba, in 1919. He enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force Communications Division. Following his discharge, he was employed by Canadian Railways as a station agent and operator at Wapella, SK, and other prairie stops. He married Gertrude Davidson in 1944, and they had three children and six grandchildren. Garnet passed away from leukemia in 1957, at age 38. JEWELL, Wellington Ralph SPECIAL AREA DUTY & PEACETIME Wellington was born in Rainy River District in 1936 and enlisted at age 17 with the Royal Canadian Artillery, serving in Canada and one year in Germany. He has been a member of Branch #60 of The Royal Canadian Legion for 38 years.
