59 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca BOYD, Llewellyn Ritchie Wellington “Welly” WWI Llewellyn was born on July 18, 1898, in Lyons Hall, Manitoba. He joined the Canadian Expeditionary Forces 1st Depot Battalion Winnipeg as a Sapper on March 1, 1916. He served in 107th Brigade and 3rd Brigade C.E. France. He was demobilized on May 7, 1919. Welly embarked from Canada at Halifax on September 18, 1916. He was hospitalized for surgery on the septum and twice for mumps. He was gassed on duty on September 10, 1917. He was discharged on July 5, 1919, and he received the 1st Good Conduct Badge 1-3-18. BOYLE, Robert L. WWII Robert was born in Portage La Prairie in 1921. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in Winnipeg and graduated in September 1943 on single-engine aircraft. He had thrity-six missions flying Wellingtons and Lancasters, and after the war, he flew the Lancaster to Pierce, AB, where it would be mothballed. Robert was discharged in Winnipeg on January 13, 1946. He has been a member of Portage La Prairie Branch #65 of The Royal Canadian Legion for 47 years. BRECKNELL, Dale H. WWII Dale was born in Drake, SK, in 1922. He joined the RCCS attached to the 2nd Field Artillery, 1st Division and served in Canada, England, Wales, Scotland, Sicily, Italy, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. BRANNAN, Percival H. WWII Percival was born on May 29, 1912, in Fort Frances, Ontario. He enlisted in Winnipeg with the Lord Strathcona Horse Regiment on May 5, 1941, serving in Canada, the UK, Central Mediterranean area and Continental Europe. He had 58 months of total service in the RCAC serving as a fully trained trooper, driver and driver mechanic being employed as a tank and truck driver throughout the war. He spent 51 months overseas in the UK, Italy and N.W. Europe and was wounded at Ortona, Italy, on February 17, 1944, and was promoted to Sergeant on December 29, 1944. On VE Day, he was in service in Holland. Percival was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, the Italy Star, the France/Germany Star, the Defence Medal and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. He was discharged on February 27, 1946, and returned to his home and family in Sioux Lookout, Ontario. Percy passed away on March 30, 1970, and was a member of Sioux Lookout Branch #78 of The Royal Canadian Legion for 23 years.
