173 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca ONCHULENKO, Steve WWII Steve was born in Boulton Municipality, Manitoba, in 1919. He enlisted in June 1941 with the Canadian Medical Corps, 10th Field Ambulance, 2nd Division serving in Canada, England, France, Holland and Germany. He was discharged in January 1946, and has been a member of Russell Branch #159 of The Royal Canadian Legion for 63 years. ORCHARD, Edward H. WWII Edward was born in Miami, Manitoba, in 1918. He joined the Royal Canadian Army Service Corp 24th Field Ambulance 11th Brigade 5th Armoured Division serving in Canada, England, Italy and Holland. He joined the Canadian Troops in Holland for the Liberation of that country, and was stationed there until December 1945. Edward came back to Canada in January 1946, and was discharged in Winnipeg in March 1946. He has been a member of Altamont Branch #195 of The Royal Canadian Legion for 63 years. PACHKOWSKI, Alexander WWII Alexander was born on September 15, 1912, in Stonewall, Manitoba, to Theodore and Maria Pachkowski. After completing high school, Alex worked in Stonewall until he enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force in Winnipeg on March 12, 1942, and transferred to Lethbridge, serving in Alberta until his discharge on December 31, 1945. He met his wife in Lethbridge and they married in 1944, settling there after the war to raise their three children. Alexander changed his last name to Packard and worked at the Lethbridge Brewery until his retirement. He loved to curl, dance, lawn bowl and play cribbage. He was active with his labour union, the Senate of the University of Lethbridge and the Unemployment Insurance Commission. He passed away on October 29, 2001, in Lethbridge, Alberta, at age 89. OZIRNY, Alex WWII Alex was born in Yorkton, SK, in 1916. He joined the Lord Strathcona’s Horse, serving in Canada, Britain, Italy and North Western Europe. He passed away in 2003 and had been a member of Calgary Branch #264 of The Royal Canadian Legion for 53 years.
