33 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca BARLOW, Percy WWII Percy, son of James and Mary Barlow, was born in England in 1909, and raised in Souris, Manitoba. He graduated from Souris High School and began working for the Royal Bank. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in December 1942, and graduated as a Navigator in Winnipeg in December 1943. Percy went overseas in April 1944, and was attached to 61st Squadron RAF, Skellingthorpe, Lincoln. He was the navigator on a Lancaster Bomber on bombing operations over Munich, Germany, on December 17, 1944, when his Bomber was destroyed. Percy was killed in 1944, and is buried in the Durnbach Cemetery in Germany. He was awarded the Operational Wings for gallant service posthumously. BARLOW, Ralph WWI Ralph was born in England in 1892, and emigrated to Souris, Manitoba, in 1912 to work on farms. In December 1914, he volunteered for the Canadian Army. In March 1916, he was posted overseas to England with the 45th Manitoba Battalion Winnipeg Grenadiers. In June 1916, he transferred to the 1st Canadian Mounted Rifles encamped near Ypres. He was wounded by shrapnel on the Somme Hill 60 on August 14, 1916. Ralph was transferred to Warncliffe Hospital, Sheffield, on August 30, 1916. After convalescing, he returned to duty as a Training Officer for the remainder of the war. Ralph returned to Canada for his discharge in February 1919 in Winnipeg. He then settled near Lancer, SK, and purchased a farm. BARR, Henry WWI Henry was born in Scotland in 1894. He served for three years with the 79th Cameron Highlanders in Winnipeg before joining the 52nd Infantry Battalion, serving in Canada, England and France. While living in California in the 1930’s, he was very active in the Canadian Legion Hollywood post. Henry passed away in 1941, and is buried in the Veterans’ section of the Brookside Cemetery in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
