He enlisted with the Calgary Highlanders at age 19, taking his basic training in Shilo, Manitoba, and was sent overseas in 1944, serving in England, Holland and Germany. While he was escorting some prisoners back to camp, he had to jump over a slit trench and a shell exploded and a piece of shrapnel went through his right leg and a piece hit his right arm, while another piece hit the bolt of his rifle and broke it off. Bryce was more concerned about the rifle than his body. He was discharged in 1945, and is a Life Member of the Roseau Valley Branch #160 of The Royal Canadian Legion for 55 years. BAIRD, George WWI George joined the 27th City of Winnipeg Battalion and was killed at Vimy Ridge in 1916. No additional information is available. BARBER, William G. WWI William was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in 1889. He was drafted under the Military Service Act of 1917 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on January 11, 1918, leaving Winnipeg on February 12 and arriving in England on April 4, 1918. William passed away in 1971 and was a member of the Roseau Valley Branch #160 of The Royal Canadian Legion for five years. BARBER, Frederick C. OTTAWA POLICE Frederick was born in West Templeton, Quebec, in 1871. He joined the Ottawa City Police on November 19, 1903, with the rank of Probation. He married Mina Elizabeth in 1903, and moved west to Manitoba in 1906. He had a daughter named Sadie. He worked as a grain buyer and had two more daughters, Thelma and Beulah. Frederick passed away in 1954 at the age of 83.
