159 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca McGREGOR, Frank J. S. WWI Frank was born in Brandon, Manitoba, in 1894. He joined the 61st Battalion in Winnipeg on October 15, 1915, serving in Canada, England and France. After 14 months in England, Frank went to France where he was wounded in the battle of Somme. He passed away in 1961, and is buried in the Veterans’ section of the Brookside Cemetery in Winnipeg, Manitoba. McILVEEN, Thomas WWI Thomas was born on May 4, 1889, in Belfast, Ireland. He served one year with the 4th Royal Irish Rifles before coming to Canada. On December 17, 1914, he enlisted with the 100th Battalion CEF (2nd Winnipeg Grenadiers). On January 1, 1915, he moved to the 44th Battalion CEF, and later receiving a discharge on August 9, due to a family medical problem. On August 16, he enrolled with his last unit, the 61st Battalion CEF (106 Winnipeg Light Infantry) and on August 26, 1915, Tom’s unit left Winnipeg for England. His wife, 20-year-old Mary Jenkins, was notified in January 1917 that Tom was killed in action on November 27, 1916. He was 27 years old. Mary’s brother, Francis, was previously killed in action on October 8, 1916. They both rest in France. McLEOD, Donald WWI Donald was born in Benbecula, Isle of Skye, Scotland, on January 27,1889. He came to Canada in 1909, earning his passage by working on a cattle boat. He enlisted in the Canadian Infantry on November 16, 1914, joining the 31st Alberta Regiment and served four years overseas. While travelling to Benbecula, Scotland, to visit his parents, he struck up a conversation with a fellow traveller only to find it was his very own brother. He was discharged in 1919 with the rank of Co. Sergeant Major and was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for actions in the field. Donald returned to Mather and bought a farm, married and had four children. His son, Ken, served in World War Two, and son, Graham, with the Royal Canadian Air Force during peacetime. He passed away in 1952. McLEARY, John “Jack” WWII Jack was born in Fort William, Ontario, on October 9, 1914. He joined the 12th Manitoba Dragoons, 18th Armoured Car Regiment, serving as a Lieutenant in Canada, England, France, Belgium and Holland. He was wounded in Bergen “Op Zoom” Holland in 1944. He returned to Holland in 1984 with members of his regiment to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the town’s liberation and was chosen to place the wreath representing the Canadian Veterans at the ceremonies. Jack assisted with the establishment of a monument at Vimy Ridge Park to honour those who served in the Dragoons. He was a Life Member and Sergeant at Arms at The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #161, Arborg for 66 years. Jack received the 1939 Star, the France/Germany Star, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Silver Clasp, and the Maple Leaf Emblem War Medal 1939-1945. Jack passed away on May 2, 2004.
