167 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca MURRAY, Donald L. H. WWII Donald was born in Lyleton, Manitoba, on September 18, 1920. He enlisted on November 19, 1941, with the “Iroquois” Squadron #431, training in Brandon, Caronport, MacLeod, Regina, and graduated with wings at Dauphin in November 1942. He went overseas to Britain in December 1942, and commenced operations in October 1943, then posted to Italy in March 1944, and back to Britain to his #431 Squadron, where he flew Lancaster Bombers and completed his tour. Don was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in July 1945, and his Investiture was held in Winnipeg at the Legislative Building in February 1947. Flight Lieutenant Donald L. H. Murray passed away on October 16, 1979, of a massive heart attack. He was a member of Melita Branch and Brandon Branch of The Royal Canadian Legion. MURRAY, Wellington F. WWII Wellington was born in Boissevain, Manitoba, in 1923. He joined the #7 A.O.S. in Portage La Prairie, serving in Canada. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. Wellington passed away in 2006, and was a member of Lawrence Branch #87 of The Royal Canadian Legion. NATURKACH, John WWII John was born in Sundown, Manitoba, in 1922. He joined the RCA and Royal Canadian Army Service Corp serving in Canada and England. He is a Life Member of Fort Garry Branch #90 of The Royal Canadian Legion. NAAYKENS, Peter Lenard WWII Peter was born in Sheho, SK, on March 25, 1925. He enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1942, serving overseas in Holland, Belgium and Germany. Peter was witness to the many horrors of the concentration camps. After the war, he returned to Winnipeg, where he met and married Ruby Biles and moved to Calgary, AB, until 1948, when he was called home to help with the family business, Naaykens Transport in Beausejour, Manitoba. Peter and Ruby remained in Beausejour and raised a daughter and three sons. Peter was an active member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #132 in Beausejour and he stayed with the family business until illness forced him into an early retirement. He passed away on December 26, 1987.
