187 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca PTOSNICK, Roger WWII Roger, son of Joseph and Clara, was born in Thornhill, Manitoba, on July 6, 1921. He enlisted with the Manitoba Rifles in 1940, and with the Lord Strathcona’s Horse Royal Canadians in June 1941, arriving at Fort Osborne Barracks in Winnipeg. He served in Canada, Britain, Italy and North Western Europe. He received his discharge on February 28, 1946, and took up plastering and stucco and later as ice-maker at Private School Arena. Roger retired in 1986, and is a Life Member of Fort Garry Branch #90 of The Royal Canadian Legion. He also volunteered at the Legion Athletic Sports Camp located at International Peace Gardens. PTOSNICK, Tony WWII Tony, son of Joseph and Clara, was born in Thornhill, Manitoba, on April 10, 1923. He enlisted with the PPCLI, arriving in England and stationed with a holding unit. He was then transferred to the Algonguin Regiment. Tony became a prisoner of war in Germany and was liberated on April 10, 1945, his birthday. He said that was the best present of his life. Tony returned to Canada and his parents’ home in Thornville and then moved to Winnipeg, MB, and got married and took up the trade of painting and decorating. Tony passed away in 1990 and was a member of Charlesworth Branch #100 for ten years and twenty-five years with the St. James Branch #4 of The Royal Canadian Legion. PURCHASE, Gordon T. WWII Gordon was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on September 19, 1919. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force on October 9, 1940, at age 21, and was posted to Camp Borden on January 1, 1940, for Guard Duty. He then went to Calgary for wireless training on February 3, 1941, and completed his course. Gordon served in the United Kingdom, Gibraltar, India, Ceylon (Sri-Lanka). He received the 1939-Star, the Burma Star, the British Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the Victory Medal and the OPS-Wings for one tour. Gordon has been a member of the St. Vital Branch #16 and Norwood St. Boniface Branch #43 of The Royal Canadian Legion for the past 47 years. PUCCI, Victor E. WWII Victor was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in 1923. He joined the Destroyer MS Montreal serving in Canada, England and on the High Seas. He passed away in 2004, and had been a member of Montecassino Branch #178 of The Royal Canadian Legion for twenty-five years.
