117 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca GRIEVE, MacDonald S. “Mac” WWII Mac was born in Shoal Lake, Manitoba, on August 8, 1921, one of three children of Rena and Stewart Grieve who served in the forces. While still in his teens, Mac enlisted in the 12/18th Dragoons Armoured Car Regiment of the Canadian Armed Forces during the early years of the war. He took his basic and advanced training in Manitoba and other parts of Canada prior to embarkation to England as a mechanical transport driver and served throughout France and the low countries of Europe and was also posted to the Italian Campaign. Mac passed away on June 24, 1989, and is survived by three sons. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the 1939-45 War Medal, the 1939-45 Star, the France/Germany Star, the Italy Star and the Certificate War Service Badge #GS1070533. He was a member of Shoal Lake Branch #72 of The Royal Canadian Legion. HAINSTOCK, James A. WWI James was born in Shoal Lake, Manitoba, in 1890. He enlisted in Russell on May 24, 1915, with the 44th and 43rd Battalions 11 Reserves, serving in Canada, England, France and Belgium. He was discharged in Winnipeg on January 3, 1919, and received the DCM, Allied Medal and Victory Medal. James passed away in 1965 and was a member of Russell Branch #159 of The Royal Canadian Legion. HALLEN, Edgar A. WWII Edgar, son of George and Annie Hallen, was born in Rosetown, SK, on March 29, 1924. She enlisted with the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion in March 1944, training in Petawawa and Shilo and serving in Canada, England, France, Holland and Germany. He also was part of the 12th Manitoba Dragoons for two years prior to enlisting in the artillery in September 1943. In April, he made a Victory Bond jump at Minnedosa and went overseas in July 1944. Edgar was killed in action on May 7, 1945, at age 21 and is buried at the Canadian War Cemetery in Holland. Edgar was a member of the Neepawa Branch #23 of The Royal Canadian Legion. HALL (nee KOSONIC), Joan E. WWII Joan was born at St. Boniface, Manitoba, on May 14, 1922, and enlisted with the WRENS on July 9, 1944, with HMCS Chippewa at Winnipeg, Manitoba, at age 22. After her basic training, she was assigned to HMCS Bytown at Ottawa, Ontario, as a filing clerk, messenger and secretary to her Senior Naval Officer until her discharge on June 17, 1946, at HMCS York, Toronto, Ontario. In August 1952, she married Charles Hall (a Winnipeg Rifles Veteran) and chose to be a homemaker. She has been a very active auxiliary member as well as in The Legion Branch Major Hughes #54 for 59 years. Her husband passed away in 2003.
