51 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca BLAIR, Kenneth C. WWII Kenneth was born in Salem, Manitoba, in 1919. He enlisted in the Army Reserves in 1939 for basic training and transferred to the Royal Canadian Air Force Transport Repair Depot, Trenton, Ontario. In June 1943, he was posted overseas to England and the continent with the 143 Wing Airfield Squadron. The one story foremost in his mind was going off the barge in Normandy in June 1944 on D-Day. He was discharged in January 1946. His family members have many fond memories of his remarkable life. He received the 1939-1945 Star, the France/Germany Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal & Clasp and the War Medal 1939-1945. Kenneth passed away in 2009 and had been a member of the Portage La Prairie Branch #65 of The Royal Canadian Legion for 60 years. BOILEAU, Craig Francis WWII Craig was born in Fort Francis, Ontario, in 1925. He served as a wireless air gunner with the Royal Canadian Air Force for only thirty months and was based out of Sydney, Nova Scotia. His mission was to patrol the eastern coastline. Craig travelled from Mont Joli, PQ, to Calgary, AB, and received a good education and made good memories still keeping in touch with many of his compatriots. Craig has been a member of Atikokan Branch #145 of The Royal Canadian Legion for 17 years. BOOKER, Walter H. WWII Walter was born in Snowflake in 1923. He enlisted in the Army in February 1945 and admitted to Fort Osborne Military Hospital on March 1, 1945, and was sent to the (3CC) Convalescent Centre in Portage La Prairie on March 27, 1945, for care and rehabilitation. The day that he was to start basic training in Dundurn, SK, his farm leave came through on May 28, 1945. He was home for about five months and then reported back to H.O. Fort Osborne where he was put on staff because the war was over. Walter was a runner and then got bumped to kitchen staff. He was discharged on May 7, 1946, and has been a member of the Border Branch #207 of The Royal Canadian Legion for 30 years. BOLTER, John L. WWII John was born in Neepawa, Manitoba, in 1917. He joined the Army in the spring of 1942 and went directly to Kingston, Ontario, where he was in the Ordinance Corps. By the fall, he was in Ottawa where he joined the Canadian Army Band until the summer of 1945. John was discharged due to medical reasons. In November 1945, he married Alice Stoughton and had two children, Jack and Gail. He passed away in 1962 and had been a member of Birtle Branch #55 of The Royal Canadian Legion for ten years.
