151 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca MAITLAND, G. T. M. “Tom” WWI Tom was born in Souris, Manitoba, in 1887. He joined the Canadian Army on May 4, 1916, and trained at Camp Hughes, now known as Camp Shilo, MB, and went overseas on a ship called the Grampian and saw service in Belgium and France with the 181st and 52nd Battalions. At the end of the war, he returned to Canada aboard the ship Olympic, a sister ship of the Titanic. Tom returned to his occupation as an employee of the Canadian Pacific Railway, where he was a locomotive engineer. On July 7, 1919, he married Anna Belle McDonald and they had four children. Tom was proud to serve under Lieutenant-Colonel W.W. Foster, Officer Commander of the 52nd Canadian Infantry Battalion. He passed away in 1975 and had been a member of Souris Branch #60 of The Royal Canadian Legion for 18 years. MALUTA, Fred WWII Fred was born in Roblin, Manitoba, in 1920. He enlisted with the Canadian Army Active Service on May 12, 1941, and joined the Canadian Postal Corps, Ottawa Base Post Office. He took his basic training at Cornwall, Ontario, and was posted to Sub. Base Post Office, Halifax, NS, serving at Royal Canadian Air Force Eastern Command Dartmouth, NS, and then to Royal Canadian Air Force Service Flying School Military Post Office #12, Brandon, MB, as acting corporal for 21 months. Fred took advance fire arms training at Sandhurst Military College then to Base Post Office, Belgium. While on duty, he was in an accident and had surgery at 67 British Hospital. He was then posted to the 3rd Division Canadian Postal Unit, Holland. Fred returned home to Canada on January 15, 1946, and received his discharge on March 7, 1946. He was awarded the France-Germany Star and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. MARTIN, Albert B. WWI Albert was born in Oakland Municipality, near Nesbitt, Manitoba, in 1891, and lived on the farm with his parents until he enlisted in 1917 with the 43rd Cameron Highlanders, serving in Belgium, France and Canada. He returned home on May 19, 1919, to take up farming for a living in Welwood and Oakville, MB. In 1941, Albert enlisted for service again and was officially made a guard for foreign prisoners held in Canadian Prisoners War Camps. He returned to Oakville to his farm after the war. He passed away in 1980. MARSHALL, Arnold A. WWII Arnold was born in Freefield District, Manitoba, in 1925. He enlisted in Winnipeg in December 1943 with the 8th Provost Corps 21st Army Group, serving in Canada, the UK, Europe, Holland, Belgium and France. He was discharged in Winnipeg in July 1946. Arnold was a member of Russell Branch #159 of The Royal Canadian Legion before he passed away in 2003.
