The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 1 This message brings you greetings from the Saskatchewan Provincial Command of The Royal Canadian Legion. We are very proud to release the fifth edition of this Military Service Recognition Book. These books honour Veterans past and present, and this next edition is a continuation of that effort. We are always on the lookout for submissions for future books. We will hopefully continue to publish these books as long as we have family members and Branches that will send us pictures and information for inclusion in the books. Canvassing for donations is underway for the production of our next Military Recognition Book, so when you receive a call, you will know what it is all about. The next book is slated for release in the spring of 2013. Please contact the Saskatchewan Command Office in Regina if you are interested in adding a family member or a multitude of Veterans for one of our future books. We will give you a submission form that you can complete and paste a picture onto as well. Our website also contains the submission form at: www.sasklegion.ca All the previous books that have been produced are also on the website for your viewing pleasure. They can be downloaded and portions printed as well. I would like to extend my thanks and appreciation for all the family members and Legion Branches that have submitted pictures and information on the Veterans that are contained in this book. It is a true tribute and a great show of our appreciation for their sacrifice so that we can enjoy our current way of life in Canada. This book is intended to be placed in the Schools, Libraries and Educational facilities that are in your community to review and enjoy and learn a little more about what the citizens of our area have done and are currently doing on our behalf. Military Service Recognition Book 2 I am honoured that once again Saskatchewan Command of The Royal Canadian Legion has asked me to provide a forward to this Military Service Recognition Book. As a native of Saskatchewan I am very proud of the military involvement of our people in the past and the present. In this book, published by Fenety Marketing Service for The Royal Canadian Legion in Saskatchewan, you will find more faces of those men and women from Saskatchewan who have served this country in our military. Many paid a high price for the freedoms that we enjoy today and many came home to go on to be the leaders of Saskatchewan. Many more became the backbone of this province. They all contributed to Canada, and this great province of Saskatchewan. For this we owe them. Using this publication, we pay back some of that debt by ensuring that those who have passed on, and those that are still living, are not forgotten for their sacrifice. Once again Saskatchewan Command has lived up to the aims and objects of The Royal Canadian Legion with the publication of this book. Those who have served, or are still serving, will not be forgotten. They will live on in the pages of this book. As I have said in the past, it is a tribute that is well deserved. As you go through this book, stop and think about all of those who have gone to war, or to missions, to make Canada and Saskatchewan a better place for us to live. The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 3 Message from the Premier of Saskatchewan On behalf of the Government of Saskatchewan, it is my distinct honour to provide greetings for the 5th Annual Military Service Recognition Book. This publication is a great resource for our youth and all those interested in learning more about military history and the immense contributions of our Canadian Armed Forces to protect the freedoms we cherish as Canadians. The people of Saskatchewan are profoundly grateful to our current service personnel and Veterans for their courage and sacrifice in defense of our country and those unable to defend themselves. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped to make this publication possible, including the family members of the servicemen and women profiled in this book. Your support helps The Legion to continue to fulfill its role as the “Keepers of Remembrance” as well as sustain many ongoing community activities for Saskatchewan’s Veterans and their dependants. The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 9 ADAMS, Archie T. WWII Archie’s parents were John and Jane Adams. They had homesteaded in the Davidson district where John had died. Archie and his mother Jane moved to Viscount in 1921, where he was raised. He joined the Army during WWII and served with the Royal Canadian Engineers as a Sapper. ALLAN, Andrew Angus WWII Andrew was born to Alexander and Hannah Allan on August 30, 1912 just north of Plunkett, SK. He attended Pilot Grove School with his brother, Munro, who served with the Saskatchewan Light Infantry. Andrew joined the Army in Regina, SK and served as a private with the South Saskatchewan Regiment in Europe. He was killed in action on August 19, 1942 in Dieppe, France and is buried in the Canadian War Cemetery at Hautot-sur-Mer, Seine Maritime, France. ALLAN, Munro WWII Andrew was born in Unity, SK on July 23, 1914. He joined the Army in 1939 and served with the Saskatoon Light Infantry in Italy, Germany and England. Upon his discharge in 1945, he returned home and delivered mail out of Burr, SK and then became pasture manager of Wolverine PFRA (Community Pasture) from 1951 to 1970. He then went on to Mayfair Community Pasture until 1976, when he retired. Munro moved to North Battleford with his wife, Lillian, with whom he had raised six children. Munro died on April 26, 1966.

The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 11 AMENT, Lloyd Edward “Sparky” WWII Lloyd was born on August 20, 1918 in Kindersley, SK. He enlisted in Saskatchewan in 1941 and served as a Gunner in the Royal Canadian Artillery. He was posted to England and landed with his unit, the 67th Light Anti-Aircraft Battery, on Juno Beach on D-Day, June 10, 1944. He survived to fight in France, Holland and Germany. Lloyd married Pauline Palmer in July 1945 in Kent, England and returned to Canada where he was released in 1945. He was a member of RCL Kindersley Branch 57. ANDERSON, Robert Charles WWII Robert was born on March 15, 1919 in Saskatchewan’s Hazelwood district. On October 27, 1939, he enlisted with the South Saskatchewan Regiment and was later transferred to the First Canadian Special Service Battalion, a parachute commando unit. He was wounded at Dieppe in 1942 and was killed in action in the south of France on September 13, 1944. Robert was twenty-five, married and had a four-year old daughter. He was buried in France. ANDREW, Elmer Roy WWII Elmer was born on September 2, 1922 to Billy and Carrie (Campbell) Andrew at Maymont, Saskatchewan. He enlisted as a Private in Saskatchewan on December 10, 1941 and served overseas in the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps. He was a member of 69 Transport Company when he was killed in action in Holland on April 19, 1945. He is interred in Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery in Nijmegen in The Netherlands. Elmer had married Rosalie Jones in Essex County, England on October 22, 1943. She never came to Canada. Andrew Lake, a geo-memorial in Northern Saskatchewan, perpetuates Elmer’s sacrifice.
