The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 51 COOPER, Herbert Kenneth WWII Herbert was born in Vanguard, Saskatchewan in 1919. He joined the Army on January 9, 1941and served as a Private in Toronto, Ontario with #2 Detachment of the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps. He was a tradesman, motor mechanic and a welder, gaining experience from his farm background with maintaining machinery and motors. He received technical school training through NRMA. Herbert was a patient at the Christie Street Hospital from July 8-23, 1943 and was discharged from active service a month later for health reasons. Herbert was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the War Medal 1939-45. He died in 1996. COX, Henry Charles “Charlie” WWI Charlie was born in 1897 in Leicester, England. He came to Saskatchewan in the 1920s and worked on farms in various locations until he settled in the Glynfield district, north of Plunkett. He married Elizabeth Smith of England – quite literally off the boat, and together, they raised three children. Because of Charlie’s service in the Army during WWI, he applied for and was accepted as the postmaster of Plunkett. Charlie died in 1932 and Elizabeth carried on until her retirement in 1962. COX, Sidney WWI Sidney was born to John Edward and Ellen Cox of Balscote, Banbury, Oxon in England on October 11, 1886. He farmed in the Viscount, SK area before enlisting in the Army on December 11, 1915 in Saskatoon, SK and serving overseas as a Private with the 46th Battalion, Saskatchewan Regiment. His wife was Fanny Mary Cox of Mindemoya, Manitoulin Island, ON. Sidney was killed in action on May 5, 1917 and he is buried at La Chaudière Military Cemetery in Vimy, located at Pas de Calais, France.
