The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 27 BERANEK, Edward “Ed” WWII Ed was born on January 11, 1911in Plunkett, SK where he took his early schooling. He worked as a Canadian Pacific Railway pump man with his dad at sites in Wolverine and Colonsay. He then joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1942, serving in Halifax, NS as a pump man in the maintenance department until his medical discharge in 1943 due to ruptured ulcers. After his discharge, Ed was employed by Robin Hood Mills in Saskatoon, SK as a stream engineer and a watchman until emphysema forced him to retire in 1961. He married Marybelle Finlayson. BERANEK, Jerome “Jerry” WWII Jerry was born in Colonsay, SK in 1916 and was one of four brothers who signed up for the services. Jerry attended Plunkett School then Bedford Road in Saskatoon, SK. He played goal for the Junior Wesley Hockey Team. He attended the U of S and in 1937, won a part athletic/part academic scholarship to the U of Southern California in Los Angeles, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree. Jerry was loaned to the US Government’s Navy to do research on submarine detection devices and was stationed at an underwater laboratory. He then joined the Columbia Broadcasting Corp. and became interested in television, quickly taking charge of the huge Television and Research Division at Mount Wilson, Los Angeles. Jerome died in 1954. BERANEK, Robert “Bob” WWII Bob was born in 1922 in Plunkett, SK where he attended school until the family lost their house to fire. They then moved to Saskatoon, SK where he attended Pleasant Hill School and Bedford Road. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1942 and served as a Bombardier in England. He returned to Canada in 1944 and was stationed at Dafoe, SK where he was an instructor. Bob’s three brothers, Ed, Stan and Jerry, were also in the Forces.
