The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 137 GARNETT, Wilfred R.G. “Sandy” WWII Sandy was born on September 26, 1919 in Rocanville, SK. He enlisted in Regina and served with the Regina Rifle Regiment in the United Kingdom until he was injured in August 1943. When he came out of the hospital, he was sent to the Lake Superior Regiment and went into Normandy with the Superiors for service through the Northwest European campaigns. He left the service in Regina on September 1945 as a Private. Wilfred married and had one son and one daughter. He became a carpenter after the war and worked at that trade for thirty-seven years, thirty-two of them as foreman or superintendent. Sandy has been a member of RCL Nutana Branch 362 for twenty-one years and is a member of the Royal Regina Rifle Association. GARVIK, Klas WWII Klas was born in 1912 in Seljord, Telemark, Norway. He immigrated to Canada in 1929 and worked in Alberta for a while before going to the Meacham, SK area to work for farmers and eventually buying land himself. He joined the Army in 1942, serving in Halifax, NS and in Vernon, Prince Rupert and Vancouver, BC before being discharged in 1946. He hauled merchandise for many people in the area and in 1947, joined the Department of Highways. He married Winnie (Davis) Anderson and helped raise three children. Klas died in 1965. GEDIR, George Gerald “Gerry” WWII Gerry was born on November 26, 1920 in Peterson, SK. He was engaged in farming before he joined the Royal Canadian Navy on April 15, 1942 in Saskatoon, serving first at the naval repair base at Comox-Nanaimo. Then, he was a helmsman quartermaster and anti-aircraft gunner aboard HMCS Springhill, the senior ship of Escort group No. 16, consisting of frigates doing escort duty on the high seas. On July 27, 1945, he left the service in Saskatoon as an Able Seaman. After the war, he farmed for nine years, was a grain buyer for eighteen years and then served twelve years with the Saskatchewan Highways department. Gerry married and had one son and two daughters.
