The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 121 FLEMING, John Thomas “Tom” WWI & WWII Tom was born in Quebec on October 5, 1885. He served in the Army during WWI and then re-enlisted for WWII but was too old to go overseas. He became part of the Veteran’s Guard at an internment camp in British Columbia. His brother, Pat, and his nephews, Ken and Bill Fleming, served in WWII and his other brother, Pete, enlisted in WWI. Tom married Margaret and they farmed in the Viscount, SK district, then in the 30s, moved to farm in the Porcupine Plain area. They moved permanently to BC where he worked as lumberjack. Tom and Margaret raised a family of four. He died at his home in Winfield, BC in August 1968. FLEMING, Joseph Gordon “Pete” WWI Pete was born on March 1, 1894 in Shefford County, Quebec. He joined the Army and was with the first contingent of Canadian troops in 1914. He served in Britain, Continental Europe and suffered a gas attack at Ypres, France. Despite being gassed, he remained overseas until 1918. After his discharge, he worked in Saskatchewan on Viscount district farms until he moved to British Columbia to the Okanogan in the 1930s. There he worked in construction and forestry but was killed in a construction accident in December 1944 at Enderby, BC. His brothers also enlisted and served, Tom in WWI and Pat in WWII. FLEMING, Kenneth Gordon “Ken” WWII Ken was born to Gilbert Victor (Vic) and Dorothy Fleming, in Meacham, SK on October 12, 1919 and he attended York School. He enlisted in 1941with the 110th Field Battery, and trained as a Gunner in Regina, SK, Brandon, MB and Debert, NS. He went overseas in July 1942 and transferred to the 16th Armoured Tank Corps of the 1st Hussars, serving as a Private. Ken was killed at Caen, France on August 8, 1944 and he is buried at Brettevillesur-Laize Canadian War Cemetery in Calvados, France. A geo-memorial has been named in his honour: Fleming Island, in southwestern Cree Lake. Ken’s brother, Bill, also volunteered to serve.
