LEST WE FORGET 1 Message from the Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan Congratulations to the Saskatchewan Command of the Royal Canadian Legion on the completion of the 17th Edition of the Military Resource Service Recognition Book. As His Majesty’s representative in Saskatchewan, I am pleased to extend greetings on behalf of King Charles III, King of Canada and I offer my wholehearted thanks to all those who support this valuable publication and the Legion’s many other important initiatives. As Honorary Patron of the Saskatchewan Command, I am especially grateful to everyone who helped to research and share the images and stories of the members of the military who are recognized in this book. It is a wonderful gift for families to have their loved ones celebrated in this manner. These brave men and women from our province have played a vital role in defending the peace, freedom and democracy that we enjoy. We can all be proud of their service and sacrifice. Thank you to the members of the Royal Canadian Legion for providing crucial assistance to veterans. My family has a special bond with the Legion as my wife’s father and uncles served in the SecondWorldWar and were instrumental in establishing a Legion branch in their northern community. LEST WE FORGET 3 A Message from the Premier On behalf of the Government of Saskatchewan, it is an honour for me to provide greetings for the 17th Annual Military Service Recognition Book. Saskatchewan is proud of all our Veterans who have served, and express gratitude to those who continue to serve so bravely and with such great courage, selflessness, and determination. For more than a century, Saskatchewan men and women have made valiant and noble sacrifices as members of the Canadian Armed Forces. And, as a province and as a nation, we commend those in uniform, past and present, for their tireless contributions to our communities, our province, and our country. I commend everyone that has contributed their time and energy to make this publication possible. As a historical resource, this commemorative book allows us to meet more personally the military personnel who made immense contributions to protect the freedom we enjoy today. Thank you to all of our Veterans who answered the call to service, and to our brave sons and daughters who still answer the call today. LEST WE FORGET 5 On behalf of Saskatchewan Command of the Royal Canadian Legion I bring greetings and express deepest gratitude to those who have supported and contributed to this the 17th edition of the Military Service Recognition Book. This edition provides names, faces and details of military service of Canadians who served our Country. I am proud to say that this edition is marked with a memorial tribute to Queen Elizabeth II. In this edition, the Royal Canadian Legion, as keepers of Remembrance, also recognize and commemorate the service of the more than 40,000 Canadian Armed Forces members who served in Afghanistan, Canada’s largest military deployment since the 2nd world war. We are proud and thankful for their dedicated service. This book will help future generations to better understand our Veterans and serving members for all they have done and continue to do to uphold peace, freedom, and democracy. LEST WE FORGET 15 The Cereal Seed Experts The Naming of New Seed Varieties Will Honour Veterans FP Genetics Inc. and The Royal Canadian Legion, Saskatchewan Command, are pleased to announce a new collaboration that will seek to honour veterans and highlight the sacrifices they have made in service of community and country. “The legislation that applies to naming plant varieties operates on the principle of “One Variety – One Name”. This affords us a unique, timeless and global opportunity to recognize veterans for their contributions to Canada by naming new crop varieties in their honour. Symbolically, these variety namesake’s will further contribute to the global community through high quality food production, which Canadian farmers are known for” says Chris Churko, CEO of FP Genetics. As part of this collaboration, The Legion's Saskatchewan Command will accept and review applications from military and RCMP veterans and their families, and make recommendations to FP Genetics for variety names. As part of the submission, applicants will submit biographies and the stories they wish FP Genetics and Saskatchewan Command to share with the community. Once a variety bearing a veteran’s name is officially registered, the public will be able to access variety information via FP Genetics communications and follow links to the Legion’s website to learn more about the person behind the name, their contributions to community and country, and the great services the Royal Canadian Legion – Saskatchewan Command offers in support of veterans and first responders.
